SAB: The Person Below Me #12

From previous thread:

Quote:
I know what you mean about fear of disposing things. I worry that I will regret it.

Weirdly enough, though, I've never regretted anything that I have thrown away, with one exception. Once, I threw away a cassette tape with my dad's voice on it. It was broken, and after saving it for years, I decided it couldn't be fixed. Of course, now, I know that it could be fixed so easily. It would have just been a matter of rolling the tape back onto the roller and finding a way to reattach it.

Oh, well, we can't take it with us when we go, anyway. No matter what we accumulate, it all stays here.

As for something someone has called me, I may have already shared this story.

When I was elementary age, my parents sent me to a private school K-12. I was only five years old, but I road a school bus for an hour with high school age students.

These two mean girls, sisters, one was a sophomore and one was a senior in high school, used to call me Amy Pygmy Cow. They would moo every time we passed a pasture with cows. They pointed out the window and announced that those cows were my cousins. It made me cry.

They also teased my best friend on the bus. They called her Angie Eskimo. I'm not sure why they did it to us. We were only five years old. The bus driver was too old to do anything. It was awful riding the bus with them for two hours every day. For a long time, I got off the bus every afternoon in tears.

I remember, one time, the younger sister was wearing platform sandals, and she kicked my friend Angie in the face, when she bent over to pick something up that had fallen onto the floor of the bus. It left a red mark on her cheek bone and gave her a black eye.

These two girls really terrorized the school bus. No one ever stopped them or did anything to them. I just learned how to be super quiet and not draw attention to myself. And eventually, I embraced my cow cousins. It didn't bother me anymore, when they said that. I did stay clear of the girls so they could not kick me, in the way that they had kicked my friend.

TPBM will tell us about a time when they witnessed cruelty?
I am very sorry to hear that Amy. I hope my question didn't bring up bad memories for you.

Yes. When it happened to me. These girls in my seventh grade class were really, really disgusting to me. At first it was mean petty junior high stuff like kicking my seat. But then it escalated to locking me in the bathroom and then telling me that because I was Jewish I should go to a concentration camp.

I still shiver at the memory and that was 18 years ago.

ETA: Would be nice if I put my own TPBM question.

TPBM has a playlist of some kind for an activity? Writing, working out, etc?

No worries! I love my memories.

Those seventh-grade girls were awful people. Did the school or the police ever stop them?

I have a playlist for driving in my car. When I was a junior in college, I lived in a three-story town home with three other girls in Fairfax, VA. It was nicely furnished, but the formal dining room was empty. I remember, when the other girls were out of the house, I would lie on the floor, staring up at the ceiling, and blast music to match my feelings of angst.

I used to blast this song so loud that I shook bits of paint off the ceiling at times.

TPBM will share a song from his or her playlist for writing, working out, driving, etc.?

Um, well, not really? I didn't want to say anything. One of my best friends was a grade ahead of me and we both had chorus. So she informed the teacher to look out for me, but at that age, you really don't want to make things worse for yourself by saying anything. Luckily I was not in their class the next year, but we had lunch. Actually one of the families my sister used to babysit for (she babysat A LOT), the mother was a school social worker and my school was one of her schools. So she did get involved and afterwards, people were telling me they were proud of me. Then they apologized at the end of the year. I'm actually Facebook friends with one of them. Not sure what that says about me. I guess that I'm hopeful people grow out of those bullying ways. And one of them is a teacher now too! Haha. Go figure.

Anyway back to your TPBM question. Yes, I listen to spotify when I work out on my iPhone and one song I really enjoy is Lana Del Ray's "Blue Jeans."

TPBM likes DIY projects?

No, I don't like projects. I don't like building things or making things.

TPBM enjoys sitting on the beach and looking out at the ocean?

* That's awful about those girls. I hate the thought that one of them is a teacher now.

I'm Facebook friends with someone who threatened me with physical violence in high school, too. I had forgotten all about it, until I read your post.

I just double checked for her name, and it's there.

She told me to watch my back in the locker room, for missing a shot in a volleyball game during PE class. She insinuated she could seriously hurt me, and she probably could have done just that. I don't remember too much else about it, except that I feared her.

We were never friends. I'm not sure why I am Facebook friends with her now, except that we share nearly 100 friends from high school. I don't even know who requested the friendship.

I could unfriend her, of course, but I probably won't. We attended the same high school and know all of the same people, and that's a connection.

It's weird, though. Social media is weird.

I do. Especially at night.

TPBM will read us something someone wrote to them in a yearbook? (No need to share one that is too personal though).

***It is awful. And social media is weird. I accepted the friend request of the one who was the lesser evil, but she was still evil. Not that we really talk to be honest. Sometimes I think Facebook and other forms of social media are just superficial (and even lazy) ways of keeping in touch with people. Like you don't interact with them, but deleting them or FB altogether somehow feels wrong. It really is stupid. My dad's funny when it comes to that. He's like I have no desire to look up anybody from high school. He graduated in '65. Wow. 50 years ago I just realized. And twenty years after his high school graduation, I came along

My first love wrote this beautiful full page letter in my senior yearbook. He was leaving to go out to sea on a submarine, and he wrote, "I will return to sweep you off your feet and let nothing hold me back, not even a dragon." He was a romantic.

TPBM will read us something someone wrote to them in a yearbook?

* Facebook can be superficial, but it also allows me to easily keep in touch, with people I love, in this crazy, fast-paced world, and that's nice, too. I wonder, though, if I would be closer to them without Facebook. Maybe if we didn't have that as a tool, then we would make time to actually see each other.

I don't know.

Awww. He sounds like a romantic.

Yes. My friend Natalie who I met in my journalism class who became co-editor in chief with me wrote this:
"Dear Alyssa,

Wow - I refuse to say goodbye to you. You have been such a good friend to me. I can't even express how much I love you. Good luck in all that you do - I know you will be successful someday. Never forget me. We have been through so much these past three years in journalism and there is no one I would have rather have gone through it with. I love you munchkin! Stay as sweet as you are."
TPBM can't believe it's August?

***Yes, I know what you mean. It's kind of a double-edged sword. I guess what I meant was for certain people/relationships, it can be superficial. But for others, it is a genuine way to keep in touch. But then you do wonder what if we didn't have it?

No, I can believe it's August. I wish I had more of my cleaning and organizing done. Ugh! But I did get some done today, so I am just going to be happy for progress. I just want it all to be done, so I can relax and enjoy my home. I want to watch TV and movies and play on the internet, without feeling guilty about needing to work on my to-do list.

TPBM is looking forward to fall?

* That was a sweet note!

I am. I'm also not though. I am really enjoying this summer. But I saw some really cute hoodie sweaters so I guess I am looking forward to fall.

TPBM has seen Halloween stuff already?

**My dad told me in Michael's, he saw it. It's a little depressing. Soon they'll have Christmas stuff up in September.

***It is!

I saw Halloween candy all over our grocery store this week. At first, I thought it was Easter candy, because it was Cadbury Eggs. But then, I noticed that they were Screme Eggs with Green and White in the center.

On the first of August, that seemed rather gross to me. Hit me up in October, and I'll probably think it's cute.

Can you show me a picture of the cute hoodie sweaters?

Sure!

Mod-o-doc Button Up Hi-Low Hem Hoodie Dune - 6pm.com

They look comfy. A little pricey. $45.99 but I've seen worse. Ever been in Sacks Fifth Avenue? Yeah. I will never spend $500 on a pair of jeans! Even if I was the richest woman in the world.

There's also this one which is cheaper.

I found them via Polyvore which is my new obsession.

It is gross. I agree!

TPBM will tell us where they buy a lot of their clothes?

Those are cute!

I buy my clothes locally at Macy's or online at LL Bean.

TPBM will tell us where they buy a lot of their groceries?

* I've always known it, but it just hit me again. Over the last few years, we have pretty much put our whole life story onto the pages of these game threads.

Hello, random lurkers to the game threads, who now know as much about us as our moms. If we were celebrities, the paparazzi would be all over these pages. Of course, none of what we say might be true, too. But that's never stopped the tabloids.

Now it's King Kullen.

TPBM will tell us where they buy their groceries as well?

**And yes, that is true!

I've never heard of King Kullen. Interesting.

I used to buy my groceries at Ukrops. Since 1937, it was a locally owned grocery chain that was AMAZING. Best customer service and products in the world. And they gave so much to our community. But the children of the owners did not want to continue in the business when their parents retired, so the store sold a few years ago. All locations became Martins.

I shop at Martins and Kroger in about equal measure and don't really care for either. Both are better than Food Lion or Walmart, though. Once in a blue moon, I go to Fresh Market.

We have a Wegmans opening a couple of miles from my home next year. I have heard good things and am excited to shop there.

TPBM will tell us where they would go to college, if they could do it all over again and have admission anywhere in the world?

I think it's interesting to learn about the different supermarket chains that different states have. I have never been to a Martins or Kroger or Food Lion. I try to stay away from Walmart after watching the documentary about how they treat employees. But I can't judge people for shopping there since they do give good deals.

Good question! I think I would either have gone to the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse or I would have stayed home and attended Hunter in the city but done a semester abroad. I got a notification that the S.I. Newhouse School is offering a masters in communication online but since Syracuse is a private school, it's $40K. Which I think is ridiculous for online. I think it's ridiculous for private schools to be that much even if you're physically going there too. It's just a shame that we're a country that prides ourselves on education and yet, to get an education, you either have to starve or be paying off student loans for the rest of your life. Le sigh.

TPBM will tell me what advice they have for someone (like me) considering going to get a Master's?
