#318 "It Isn't What You Think" ~ Episode Discussion

"It Isn't What You Think"

Air Date: July 28, 2014

Synopsis: Daphne and Travis get their admission results from Gallaudet University. Meanwhile, Bay tries being Tank's friend and supports him when he meets his dad for dinner; and Toby and Lily get into a conflict regarding Sharee's make-up exam.

I really hope it isn't what I think. Lol

I don't know - I think it will be some sort of comic misunderstanding that will somehow get cleared up at the end. I get the feeling that Daphne WILL get into GU, but Travis won't and will wonder where he fits in. I see him being a great teacher one day at Carlton though if the writers go that route - maybe with Melody as a role model.

I agree with all of this.

Yes, Travis COULD be a great teacher at Carlton one day, but he could also, just as easily, take over managing the car wash, and mentor young people there. I could see him being as happy doing that. It would be nice for him to learn how to manage the books. And I could see the car wash hiring more Deaf students. Travis could manage several of John's car washes.

Last episode, I was not worried about it being a "filler" episode, and to me, it wasn't. Serious things happened to advance the story and to allow for character growth, and I was personally riveted to all of it.

This episode, however, I am a bit more apprehensive. I fear that this one WILL be a "filler" episode, based on what we have seen released as promotional material.

I hope I am wrong, though. With only 10 episodes or so per season, Switched at Birth can hardly afford any filler episodes. We had so many of them in Season 3A. It was too much. I don't want that for Season 3B. I want a tighter story.

Plus, everywhere I turn, when people are discussing Switched at Birth, I see these two comments come up over and over again:
1. Why do the writers leave out important scenes and make viewers assume so much of what's happening?

2. Why are there so many characters that certain storylines get dropped for weeks and weeks, without nary a mention?
If those two things are happening, then how in the world do viewers end up with filler episodes? It makes no sense to me.

I haven't seen filler episodes happening in Season 3B yet, though, and I really hope that they do not.

In Season 3A, I felt the episode The Scream was a filler episode. Things had built up to a point in the plot that I really wanted to see stuff happening, and it was as if the writers decided we all needed to cool our heels for a while longer. I didn't like that.

John's kiss was exposed and Bay learns about the dog fight. But that wasn't enough to fill an episode for me. I wanted something more. Anyone else?

thanks for opening.

i think travis will be rejected and daphne will get in. but because daphne is acting out, she'll decide not to go.

That's my guess, too.

I also believe that Emmett will be accepted. He will probably decide TO go to Gallaudet, but I do not believe he will stick with that decision in future episodes, especially when Emmett realizes Bay will not be on the East coast with him and may have a hereditary condition that could shorten her life.

I could see Bay taking classes at UMKC with Tank and Mary Beth. She already took one art class there this year.

Emmett won't like the idea of leaving Bay there with Tank, either.

I totally agree that a Emmett gets in, but doesn't wind up going to stay close to Bay.

It would be great if they gave John/Travis more scenes together. Since Toby wanted out of the car wash and has no interest in it, then I can see Travis running it. I don't know - if they choose not to have him run the car wash, I'd like to see him end up teaching at Carlton. It just seems like his character is thrown into scenes now.

I'm missing the 8:00 showing but I'll probably catch the 10. Or I dvr'd it.

Loved the scene with Tank/Bay at art class - that's how I wish they'd kept Tank/Bay. They're really great as friends.

I figured Travis wouldn't get in to GU - it looked like he pretty much figured that too. I hope that Melody can help him out.

Liked the Bay/Toby scene . They're totally siblings!

I'm sorry but I'm officially fed up with Lizzy. What is the deal with lack of Emmett and Bay. It's old. One measly scene tonight and it's a fight.

bemmett4life 07-28-2014 06:08 PM

Yeah, that episode sucked. I see myself watching it again...never...the lack of bemmett scenes is ridiculous. There's what 3 episodes left??

Wes&FredFan 07-28-2014 06:09 PM

I was surprised she told Tank about the possible brain aneurysm ... though I'm glad she did. I like that they're friends again. I'm disappointed that they just threw Toby/Lilly into bed like that . So much for buildup. Really like the idea of Melody getting a local version of GU. Hoping that Travis doesn't drop out.

Am I seeing things ... or did the promo show a Daphne/Travis kiss on the ferris wheel?

ollibear 07-28-2014 06:22 PM

Well, I cannot say that the episode was filler. That fear is alleviated. But another fear replaced it for me.

This show just does NOT want to show us either protagonist in a happy romantic relationship. And that's fine. It's what I want to see, but if the writers do not want to go there, then they do not want to go there.

Perhaps Bay and Daphne are too young for that.

Separately, I find both Bay's story and Daphne's story interesting. Each character is finding her identity in a different way. But together, it is too much for me.

Daphne's current story is tragic.

Bay's current story is tragic.

If Bay & Emmett were together, that might in some way balance the angst for me, but the writers are choosing not to put them together and it is just too much angst for my taste.

I imagine their ratings will shoot up, up, up, because they are certainly bringing on the drama.

But I am not pleased. I needed something warm and comforting. And while Melody and Gabe ARE sweet, and John and Kathryn ARE sweet, I needed more.

Now, to see the promo, and to see Travis kissing Daphne, and to see Bay & Emmett separated once again at a carnival where I thought they would have some happy love scenes, well, it just makes me feel more angst.

After Angelo's death, that's not what I need turned up full blast.

Even if the writers say "fooled you!" and give us a TON of Bay & Emmett in the last few episodes of the season, it won't be enough for me now.

The writers have squirreled away seven episodes and given us less than one minute of quality Bay & Emmett. After waiting two years and 50 episodes, I feel cheated.

So while it wasn't a filler episode for the show overall tonight, Season 3B has officially tipped the scale and become a Bay & Emmett wasteland.

I realize many people are not Bay & Emmett fans, but I am, and it is a disappointment for me.

bemmett4life 07-28-2014 06:37 PM

I'm not happy at all. Three episodes left. I don't see much happening in the Bemmett land next week...and crap, if she won't go out to celebrate her boyfriends acceptance in to college, maybe she will leave prom with Tank...gag..I'm so over it. I mean, they are mid fight..and they didn't even give a resolution to it...
