TNTFT! I like the title.

It's been a long conversation about Emma's character. Despite of our differences, we all agree that she is a broken character with significant flaws. That's who she is and how she's depicted. The flaws are always there, carved in her heart, etched in her soul, surrounded by walls she's built to protect herself. She is a flame that slowly burns down, and her flaws are the ashes that she's turned into. She can rise from the ashes or bury herself in it, the choice is hers - and the writers'. Her transformation from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan has been going well in the previous two seasons, but since the Neverland plot is on, it comes to a halt and even going backwards. On the island, her flaws are all magnified, strangling the air out of her lungs and driving her insane. In such a desperate time, her parents are "infuriatingly optimistic", Hook and Neal are idiots fighting over a lighter with no room in her heart for love, Henry is all she's been focusing on and now a dead body, and Emma herself is nothing but an orphan, a lost girl who didn't matter and never thought she would. She's threatened by PP's force, terrified at Neal's return, confused in Hook's infatuation and losing herself in hopelessness and setbacks. Emma is my favorite female Once character. She's supposed to be evolving from zero to hero, not devolving from hero to zero. She has the best laid plan with assistance and determination, but the situation is out of control and she's late for everything. This is not what I want or what I expect of her, and the way she treats other people is not like her at all. She's practically hurting them, especially Neal.

About Emma's fashion choice, I see her understated appearance as a sign of her lacking confidence and faith in both Operation Henry and her teammates. Generally, costumes in certain styles and manners are supposed to be an extent of characters. What a person looks like from the outside is a reflection of their personality inside. It symbolizes their traits and visualizes their mood. On this show, setting a tone for a character with a color is critically important. There are black/charcoal for Rumple, Regina and Hook, red for Red, blue for Belle and Blue, pink and white for Snow, brown for Charming and Archie. Even some supporting roles have colors - turquoise for Ariel, purple for Cora, lavender for Aurora and green for Tinkerbelle. When the color of a character's outfit is changed, it's directly linked to the activity in their heart. For example, when Snow was in a feud with Charming about house hunting, she was dressed in BLACK, which showed her slight depression and how unpleasant she was more or less. At this point, the sheriff Emma I knew was in a patriotic style. The combination of her red jacket, white tank top and blue jeans was the embodiment of her spirit and quality. Her flaws can't be erased and her history can't be rewritten, but they can be buried beneath such a tough exterior. When she's STRIPPED of her good form, all of her fatal flaws suddenly surface to the ground as Emma involuntarily puts all of them on display without awareness. When she thinks she's a lost girl who doesn't matter, she's dressed like a lost girl who doesn't matter. It's all connected. If you think it's about vanity or sexism or attack to her character, you're totally mistaken. It's my observation of what has been going on with her and disappointment at her underwhelming story arc.

The complications between her and Hook is no good as well. There are always suckers of tv love triangles, and the writers feed them with designated juicy stuffs. We've got David/Snow/Kathryn in S1, Emma/Neal/Tamara in S2 and now the ridiculous and conflicted Neal/Emma/Hook triangle in S3. You know, it's just supply and demand. Whether it's what the producers and writers want or not, ABC needs their contribution to the ratings, while I tend to believe the NOT possibility.

Hopefully she could get things done on the island and go back to SB with no regrets by the end of S3's first half.

Edit: There's something else I must say about ships. You can be a CS shipper or a ST shipper, but you can't be a CS shipper while rooting for Neal or a ST shipper while rooting for Hook. As romantic rivals, one is naturally and fundamentally excluding another. It's like you can't be liberal and conservative at the same time. Either of them could be Emma's endgame partner, but I'll always hold onto my faith in Neal and pray for a happy ending of him, Emma and Henry.

For the record, I did call Hook a hot pirate and Neal a common guy, so what? As the subtext thereof, Hook is being insolent while Neal is being humble. Moreover, as a hot pirate out on the street, Hook draws every lady's attention; while as a common guy out on the street, Neal draws Emma's attention. As God is my witness, I didn't speak anything against the character I respect and admire. Instead, I've been defending him the whole time. Badmouthing him would be blasphemous to me. If I did, I'd be damned.

And don't tell me this is irrelevant in this thread, because it's not. Emma is the storm eye, the center of this piss contest. Two guys fighting for her, she's stuck in between and she doesn't know what to do until the writers cast their verdict as a decision of hers.
