I think Cress is the oldest out of the main cast with the exception of Tim Matheson.

I guess they figured since Lavon is supposed to be older than the rest of them that they could have the actor (Cress) older as well. And he clearly looked older than the others too, imo.

Not necessarily. If he was only a like 2 years older than the others, I don't think it mattered much. but I do think that Lavon looking older helped him as mayor because we knew he was in charge of the town stuff..
