Ahh, thanks for pointing that out, Kim! I can't wait to see more of your pics! And I decided to start off the new thread with your pics in the OP.

Hi, Christine! Thanks for uploading the pics, and thank Kim for sending them!

So the place where Micheletto garotted Vitelli and DaFermo is now a school, and the plaque commemorates them?

Wow, so that's the place of Cesare's actual "beautiful deception," huh? :)

Those pics are beautiful! The color and resolution is perfect!

Some say that it is more likely that Vitelli and da Fermo were garrotted in the ducal home.

One possible house where Vitelli and da Fermo were garrotted back to back

This building is now a school, but the plaque commemorates Cesare's murder of Vitelli and da Fermo, who were garrotted back to back by Micheletto in the house.

the Rocca at Cesena
This is the rocca at Cesena, Cesare's capital. This is where he would have brought Caterina and where he received the Venetian ambassador who accused him of kidnapping Dorotea Malatesta Carraciola. Da Lorca was also found in the square in two pieces.

This is where Cesare captured and killed the conspirators that tried to betray him. (the location of the real Beautiful Deception :P )

Ducal Palace in Urbino
This is where Cesare stunned everyone by appearing to have a different target in mind and then at the last second turning on Urbino leaving Montrefeltro to barely escape ahead of Cesare's troops. It is also the place of the first fateful meeting between Cesare and Machiavelli that gave rise to The Prince.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402821995

This is the home Machiavelli was exiled to outside of his beloved Florence. Thanks to to some wise family members who inherited the house, everything on the first floor of the house remains as it did in Machiavelli's time, including original furniture.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402822096

The actual desk and chair that he would have used to finish The Prince.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402821789

View from his property. On clear days he could see the Duomo in Florence.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1402822196

A secret passage known only to him leading from his house into the countryside. He never forgot his treatment at the hands of the Medici and so this was his insurance policy in case they ever came looking for him. He also used it to sneak away and pursue his many affairs with women in the surrounding area. Evidently, his wife was quite religious and had no education and despite 7 children, he often sought solace elsewhere

You're welcome, Christine!

And thank you once again for the pics, Kim!  The Ducal palace is beautiful!

So those are Machiavelli's places, huh? Even the place Machiavelli was exiled to looks way better than most homes.

And that's where he actually wrote The Prince?

Aww, I feel bad for his wife. But it's cool that he had a secret passage.

View from Apartment in Rome (think this is where Kim is staying while in Rome?)
http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps80094129.jpg
Julius II's (Della Rovere) titular church, San Pietro in Vincoli.
http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1479fe42.jpg
Julius' (Della Rovere) tomb inside the church & Closeup of the figure on the bottom of Juius's (Della Rovere) tomb, which is Michelangelo's Moses. The Moses so completely dominates the arrangement of figures, with Julius' figure appearing so small that it leads many to think that Michelangelo didn't think much of Julius. The Michelangelo sculptures. I think if I remember from my art history studies that Julius wasn't overly kind to Michelangelo so I can understand why he felt this way.

Cesare's titular church
http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps16a99879.jpg http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...psdabf8ee6.jpg
This is where Vanozza would have given a reception for Cesare and Juan, who were both heading to Naples (Cesare to invest the new king), right before Juan was killed. It is a private residence now, so you can't get close. It is right across road from Julius' (Della Rovere) church. Some have suggested that perhaps Vanozza and Della Rovere were together before she and Rodrigo became involved.
http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps36c8effd.jpg
This is a corridor just to one side of the house where it is plausible that Juan, Cesare, and the man in the mask could have ridden out from Vanozza's house into the ghetto (just around the corner and down the street) where Juan was killed.

Urbino interior shot (From the place Cesare met Machiavelli) Hard to know which room their meeting might have taken place in, but my best guess is the one with the Della Robbia fireplace. It seems like the right size and is just off what appears to be the bedroom, which has an ensuite bathroom! They were doing restoration work in the room, so I just have an awkward photo of the fireplace.

And as bonus some art work Kim sent :) Picture of Donatello's David
http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6f7e928a.jpg
(photobucket's editors might take down this pic since god forbid he's nude  )

This is Verocchio's David. He was da Vinci's maestro.

Wow! Those are awesome pics, Christine! Kim is so lucky to be staying there and seeing all these places. And it's nice to see that Michelangelo thought as highly of Della Rovere as Cesare did. I had no idea that Michelangelo had done a sculpture of Moses. I'm ashamed to admit that. The pics of the insides of the churches are quite impressive. It's also interesting to see a pic of the area near where Juan's murder had taken place.

Vanozza's tombstone that appears on the wall in the entry of St. Mark, which is a Venetian church. This seems to have been moved at some time as the family had no connection with Venice. I think it might have originally been in St. Maria del Poppolo. This stone lists the children, Cesare, Juan, Lucrezia and Juan (<Think Kim probably meant Joffre not Juan) with their names in Latin, which seems to end the debate over birth order.

1) Vannozza dei Cattanei’s tombstone with her children listed. The stone, which had been lost, turned up about a century ago. It now rests in a covered entryway in a church not associated with the family, suggesting that perhaps it was moved at some point from Santa Maria del Popolo. 2) Closeup of Cesare’s name on the stone.

I really love these pics. It's interesting and the thread should be pinned at the top.
They should restore these stones before the text becomes totally unreadable.

PhoenixRising 06-19-2014 04:22 PM

Crap, these pics are really making me wanna take a trip to Italy.

That's a good idea, Barbara. Perhaps we should stick this thread, at least while Kim is giving us all these great pics.

So without the markers they have no idea where Juan or Vanozza are buried, Christine? It's a shame that those stones have been so damaged.

Ahh, so Cesare was the eldest son? So I guess The Borgias got the order right? I believe Juan was the younger son on the show.

Thanks for posting these, Christine!  And thank Kim once again for sending them!

Castel St. Angelo

Prisons in the Castel. Caterina would have been held here as well as other Borgia enemies.

Allesandro Farnese's Palace - Allesandro Farnese became Pope Paul III, but got his start during Alexander’s reign.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps365de2f8.jpg

The Passetto - This passage (on the top of the wall) was either built or improved by Alexander so that he could have a secure way from the Vatican to the Castel. He would have used this to escape from Charles during the French Invasion.

Rodrigo's Tomb - The Spanish church where Rodrigo is buried has been closed for 4 years for restoration, but had just opened when we were there.

http://i1347.photobucket.com/albums/...ps99ff86e8.jpg

He is buried with his uncle, Pope Callixtus, born Alfons de Borgia, who made Rodrigo a Cardinal. At the bottom are two small crests with Borgia bulls on them.

really cool photos!! I reaaaally want to travel to especially Rome one day. Even parts of Spain as well. Bucket list destination!

PhoenixRising 06-22-2014 03:22 PM

Hello, there, Carlo! Nice to see you back! Long time no see! I was hoping you'd be able to post some of your artwork here soon!

Thanks for posting Kim's pics, Christine! So that's the Castel St. Angelo, huh? Where Caterina Sforza was held. It looks pretty big, but I'm hoping that Caterina's accommodations were a lot better than the other prisoners.

Wow, so that's Rodrigo's tomb, huh?

Yeah, I'd really like to travel there as well, Carlo. Kim is so lucky she got to visit all these places.

watashisan 06-22-2014 06:44 PM

I think this can be relevant to the thread? I mean its sharing photos related to The Borgias, yes? But speaking of travel...

From learning Japanese and studying abroad in Japan, I found that there's an interest for the Borgia family there, oddly enough.
There's even two manga I've read based/inspired by Cesare Borgia (CESARE: The destroyer, the Creator 『チェーザレ 破壊の創造者』 PREVIEW and Cantarella 『カンタレラ』) as well as show The Borgias 『ボルジア家 愛と欲望の教皇一族』 released by WOWOW (and Borgia: Faith and Fear 『ボルジア 欲望の系譜』) have been imported/dubbed. I've actually even seen some episodes of The Borgias dubbed in Japanese myself. Makes great practice learning. lol

So anyway, here's some media from magazines I decided to keep from Japan JUST BECAUSE it's Borgias.

Japan JUST got season 3 started this spring. It was just interesting to see my favorite family in even Japanese. lol
So I thought I'd share. Keep posting cool pics.
