Ω What Liam has said about Gale

What I thought was really interesting was—and it’s one of the hardest
things to think about: one of your best friends, or someone in your family,
basically going off to war. And that’s kind of what happens to Gale in the
first book. As much as he’s against the government and wants to stand up
to them, he really is helpless. He can’t do anything about it. … I just thought
it was such a gut-wrenching kind of thought.

It was always for Gale. I read the script, and Gale definitely felt more right
than Peeta.

He is extremely passionate about standing up for what he believes in, which
has always been a strong part of my life. Because of the consequences of
standing up to an evil government, he has to bite his lip and live with it.
I’ve definitely had times in my life where I’ve had to hold back what I
really want to say or do.

Ω What his co-stars have said about him

On first glance he’s such a hunk that it’s easy to ascribe a hunklike
simplicity to him. But this is a phenomenally subtle actor, totally in
control of what he was doing.

He’s super quiet but really nice and that’s exactly how I imagined
Gale being. And Josh was just so humble and so social and he’s super
nice! I didn’t know what to expect when I first met him but then I
was like, ‘This is perfect; He’s like… Gale!’. Anytime he came on set
he’d have this quiet, strong attitude and I felt like that was exactly
how Gale would be.

Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was
on the actor we cast to capture him by showing, not telling. This was
accomplished so beautifully in Suzanne’s writing, and Liam was able to
translate it so naturally to the screen. At the same time, Gale’s journey
across the three books transforms him, and Liam’s performance left no
doubt that he would take us there.
