Most of their earlier scenes have been either Stefan being Caroline's mentor or them some how being in a plan to save/help Elena.

I found their closeness in season 5 a bit of a surprise tbh. So I think it's good to put them in these difficult situations. It makes their friendship more believable. It will help them get to know each other better.

That was the only significant scene. There was another short one with Enzo and there a few other mentions of Stefan in the Caroline/Elena scenes. I won't spoil it because it's quite surprising
