It would work better if the characters weren't just one way, like you said, take turns being funny and serious.

From the previews I noticed that Danny likes to stick to the rules/do things by the book while Steve likes to do his own thing/makes decisions on the spot.

Yeah, it the way Danny asked about waiting for back up and him listing off things while Steve just wanted to go in and get the guy. I might be wrong though, but that's the vibe I got.
