The Books

In the books, Aria described as having a dancer's frame; lean and lithe, she has long, straight black hair, ice-blue eyes, and pouty lips. Aria used to be Rosewood's resident "weird girl" -- but that was before a trip to Iceland did her a world of good. Artsy and imaginative, with hipster style, Aria had a passion for knitting and writing.

Her family moved back to Rosewood after her father took a three year sabbatical in Iceland. Prior to Alison's disappearance, Aria became aware that her father was having an affair with a student of his. Having promised to keep it a secret, she is kicked out of the house after the first "A" reveals the affair to her mother; her parents divorce and Aria's father marries his former student.

Aria often feels out of place in Rosewood and tends to be attracted to older, more worldly men (Ezra Fitz, her former English teacher; Xavier, one of her mother's boyfriends), which frequently causes conflicts for her. However, she finds true love with Noel Kahn; having crushed on Noel since seventh grade, the two grow close while Aria is investigating Alison's murder. Despite their steady realtionship, though, Aria often fears she's not good enough for Noel, believing he prefers "Typical Rosewood Girls".

During a confrontation between the Liars and a girl named Tabitha in Jamaica during their junior year Spring Break, Aria accidentally killed Tabitha after pushing her off the roof of their hotel.
