Once upon a time, there were two girls: the first, Emily Fields, was the star and anchor of Rosewood's swim team. Openly gay and beautiful, everything seemed like it was so easy for her. The other girl, Paige McCullers, was the swim team's captain. Insecure and uncertain, Paige wanted nothing more than to just be normal. Despite being teammates, their worlds never converged ... until fate intervened and brought them together. Paige envied Emily's seemingly perfect life, while Emily was certain that Paige had things much easier than her. Their competitive natures drew them together and pushed them apart, but everything changed when one day, Paige kissed Emily.

Paige is the girl that Emily a l w a y s wanted. Emily is the girl who makes Paige brave. A complimentary match, it isn't until they open up to each other that they realize just how alike they really are -- and how much they need each other.

In the first season, we're introduced to Paige when Emily returns to the swim team after a brief hiatus. Paige grows jealous of Emily for replacing her as the star swimmer, and the two clash, becoming rivals for the key position of relay anchor. However, Paige comes to visit Emily one night in the pouring rain to apologize, confessing that she hates herself for trying to hurt Emily. Emily is given the anchor position and Paige comes to cheer her on; seeing how unhappy Paige is, Emily offers to swim with her for fun, and the two slowly begin to bond. Paige's father becomes angered with Rosewood High, believing Emily was given preferential treatment on the swim team because of her homosexuality. Paige apologizes for her father's actions, but vents her frustration at how "easy" everything is for Emily, before finally outing herself by kissing Emily. After Paige invites Emily out on a date, the two begin a tentative romance, with Emily torn between not wanting to hide their relationship and her blossoming love for Paige, who loves and deeply admires her. Finally tired of all the drama, Emily once again breaks up with Paige.

In the second season, Emily and Paige come back into each others' lives having changed and grown as individuals. After a brief relationship with Samara, Emily is once again dating Maya, though the differences between them are taking a toll on their relationship. Paige, for her part, has grown confident and secure with herself, thanks in large part to her finally coming out to her parents. Paige explains to Emily that it was Emily's bravery in dealing with her sexuality that gave Paige the courage to come out as well. Emily and Paige begin to bond as new friends, but they still find themselves drawn to each other. Paige comforts Emily over Maya, which ends in an awkward almost-kiss, leaving them both confused and upset. At their school's masquerade ball, Paige seeks Emily out, finding her in the crowd and wanting to talk. Paige explains that although she's sorry about almost kissing Emily, she doesn't want to forget it happened. Emily and Paige agree that they have an undeniable connection, but realize that the timing just isn't right for them. Paige promises to always be there for Emily, no matter what, even if it's only just as a friend.

In the third season, Emily is struggling to get over the loss of Maya, and feels disconnected to the other Liars. She slowly begins to reconnect with Paige, agreeing to a "fresh start", but it's obvious to both of the girls that they still have feelings for each other. When Paige is drugged after drinking from Emily's flask, Emily tries to explain what happened -- which leads to Paige confessing that Emily came to her house on "that night" and kissed her. At first confused and upset, Emily comes to realize that she sought out Paige out for a reason: she wanted to be with her. The two reconcile and begin to date. Paige later explains to Emily that she was gay-bashed by Alison in 9th grade for having a crush on Emily. The other Liars accuse Paige of being A, though Emily defends her; in the process, she spills everything to Paige about "that night" and the new A. Paige vows to protect her, but is kidnapped by Maya's "cousin", Nate. Emily saves her from being nearly killed after she gets into a physical confrontation with Nate, eventually stabbing him in self-defense.
