Thank you for opening a new thread
By the way, what is the font of the title PLL in that gif? I love the curves and embellishments. They're so beautiful. |

I used Bickham Script Pro for the "A" appreciation thread. It's the closest thing to the PLL lettering -- which is a personalized font made only from the show (by a professional ~letterer).
So apologizes in advance for the mini-essay, but I was inspired by a discussion on the Aria appreciation thread. I love how the show is able to so seamlessly weave classical literature into the themes of the show: To Kill a Mockingbird: Toby being an obvious stand-in for Boo Radley and dealing with how public perception can destroy someone's life, especially when there's bias and a need to scapegoat someone. Great Expectations: Fits Emily/Alison perfectly. It's not just that one scene where Alison quotes it, but it's the whole theme of the book too, how you have Emily struggling to win the heart of someone who is "unwinnable" and how it literally affects her entire life. The Great Gatsby: This is referenced in S1 when we see the ~eyes of God/A~ on the billboard (when the girls are in the alley and find out A has Melissa's ring). But Gatsby is about rich people with problems -- they create their own messes and it hurts people, but they can't ever LEARN from it. Jenna makes a direct reference to the book, about the Liars "crushing" things and not caring about it. Erza also describes A/Alison when he talks about Gatsby being someone who is charming, but ruthless, and someone who people don't REALLY know. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter: Aside from the amusing connection with it being written by a "McCullers" and the obvious connection between the title and the girls love lives, there's themes in this book that are apparent to the show. You have all these characters who feel isolated, in part because of outside problems and in part because they isolate themselves. Plus you have a character, Singer, who is a "blank slate" character, who everyone else projects their hopes/fears/dreams/desires on in order to feel better about themselves -- which is not unlike Alison's relationship with the Liars. The Bad Seed: The obvious theme of people being "born" evil. The books really go into this -- a comparison of being "born" evil and one being "driven" to evilness. Psycho: Again, another obvious theme, but the idea of a dual identity -- which works on a few levels. You have A/their non-secret identity, you have the dual lives of the Liars, and also probably also the twin aspect. And there's probably more, but I'm too lazy to get into it. |

Sidenote, Carson McCullers was also bisexual (with a preference for women)! I didn't know this, but I just found out. Given that this is Marlene King, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason she gave Paige that last name/referenced that book and author. |
