Friends Linguistics Thread
Hi, I live in France, I'm learning English, and the US of Friends it's better than the version with the French voices!!! In the French version, the jokes, the turns of phrases are not the same and it's not funny!!!

Oh, I agree with you. I watched in Portuguese and, geez, 99% of the jokes weren't funny. Their voices really count, plus, usually the translation doesn't help, cause they try to adapt the jokes and the result is not very good.

And you know that's the same about Phoebe's songs, the lyrics are not funny in the French translation. And in the French version the commercials are remove. Example in the episode where Ross is in Britain and Emily is in New York, Joey asks to her if he can take a piece of Toblerone, in the French version he asks "Can I have a piece a chocolate?"

Well, to be fair, sometimes it's nearly impossible to translate the joke properly. For example:
Monica: You get the dessert. Rachel: Dessert? Monica: Yes! I asked you and Phoebe to pick up the pies. You did remember, right? Phoebe: Pies, oh, we though you said price! The words 'pies' and 'price' sound alike in English, but certainly not in German, because it means 'Kuchen' and 'Preis'. I don't even know how they translated it in order to make it funny. What I also hate is that they actually dub the laughter from the audience.  __________________

I feel blessed to be English sometimes. But you're totally right- it's impossible to translate the word-play jokes

I can just agree in everything with you, Nora... the German version somehow creeps me out... especially the voices *shudders*
that's why I don't watch any tv show in german anymore... __________________

Well, I started watching Friends in Portuguese, cause I didn't have cable tv, so I had no choice
 It was funny for me, although I knew that with the original voices and jokes it would be better (I already knew the lines from reading them on the internet......I'm not a normal person )Anyway, an example, that I'll never forget, is from season 2. It's similar to what Nora said, same problem. Richard makes a joke with the eye doctors: Richard: Who needs glasses? And everybody laughes, cause they use glasses for two different things, but in Portuguese you say "taças" and "óculos", so it's not funny when translated  But this is not a problem with the people who translate and dub the show. It's just that language are different, what works for English doesn't work for other languages and vice-versa. What I hate is to see people criticizing the people who dub as if it's their fault, which is not, they do an excellent job, and I respect them very much  |

I watch one or two episodes of Friends a day, and it's a good mean to speak English. And you?

Oh, I learned a lot of expressions watching Friends. Actually being here and watching american TV shows helped me a lot. I just wish I could use great expressions in real life, but they lose half of the fun when I translate them to Portuguese

I am always in awe of people who can speak another language, because it is so incredibly difficult for me. I would love to be bilingual but, unfortunately, I am not. There are many people on this board I was shocked to find spoke English as a second (or third, or fourth
) language. Their English is better than mine and it's my native language!But a girl who can speak about four languages told me that English is easy to learn, because it is everywhere and it's so easy to pick up on. Do you guys think this is true? With English being my first language, I just take it for granted, so I don't know. __________________
