The Vampire Diaries: Our Juicy Update

Whether you've read the novels or not, odds are, if you like supernatural tales, vampires in general or juicy love stories/triangles, you'll want to watch "The Vampire Diaries" on The CW. Young stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, who plays sexy vamp Stefan on the show, and Katerina Graham flew to Pasadena from their Atlanta, Georgia set to let us fire questions at them about the show, why vampires are so popular right now, were any of the cast influenced at all by the "Twilight" saga and the inevitable comparisons and hey, does anybody actually write a diary on paper anymore?

TeenTelevision: Nina you were on the Canadian hit “DeGrassi”. Is that just a great training ground for young actors?

Nina: You know what? You’re right, a lot of my castmates and I have been doing a lot of great things, and it started out with “DeGrassi.” I came to L.A. for the first time in January of this past year. And “The Vampire Diaries” was actually my first audition for a pilot. And I read the script, and I loved it. I thought hit was really cool. And I’d just gotten off a series, so obviously I was trained and ready, and I knew the drill and everything to do with it. It just sort of worked out. And the character was great. I was sick for my first audition. I had to go back to Toronto to shoot a film and I put myself on tape. The tape got me the part.

TeenTelevision: What do you think of this recent vampire fad in entertainment?

Nina: But it’s not really a fad. It’s timeless. Don’t you guys agree? It’s timeless. Vampires don’t die. They’re always around. They’re eternal. And it just seems like right now, people are really responding, and they really like it.

TeenTelevision: Which of the two hot vamps in the show, Paul here or cute Ian Somerhalder would you choose?

Paul: Ian’s not here, and I’m here, so I think the pressure is on her to answer correctly.

Nina: I don’t know. I don’t think I can really make that decision. I love these boys, but they’re like my brothers. But in terms of characters, Stefan (played by Paul) is the man who tries to reach out to her soul, and he cares about her, and he takes care of her, whereas Damon (played by Ian) has that bad-boy quality, and every girl likes a bad boy, at the end of the day. So it’s a toss-up. They’re both great guys.

Paul: Thank you, Nina.

TeenTelevision: Nina, your character Elena is a very open, innocent person. Do you identify with her?

Nina: I think that Elena has a lot of myself. I feel like I’m a lot like my character in that sense, yeah. But she has to be innocent. I know that’s one thing that’s different in the books. In the book she’s a very different character, but we really wanted somebody that had a vulnerability and had a relatability and looks for the good in everyone. And although things aren’t good right now, she is in a tough place; she lost her parents; her brother is going on a downward spiral, she’s still trying to find the good in everyone and fix things and be optimistic. And she’s trying to cope.

TeenTelevision: Have you guys read the books? They came out first in the ‘90’s.

Paul: I have.

Nina: I have as well.

Katerina: Yeah, we’ve all read them.

TeenTelevision: Did you hope your characters in the show would be the same?

Katerina: I think we all just really wanted to capture the essence of our characters because any fan or reader that’s just read L.J. Smith’s books will immediately recognize the physical difference between the characters in the books versus us. I think the most important thing for Elena, Stefan, Bonnie Bennett is to capture the essence of their friendship, who they are.

Paul: I think we maintain a lot of what the books convey in terms of the characters, you know, apart from the physical descriptions. So it isn’t like it’s some huge stretch or anything. It is quite similar.

TeenTelevision: Paul, fair or not, it seems, in acting terms, the standard for this kind of role now is Robert Pattinson in Twilight. That character has his specifics. You have yours in this series. Are you going to try all you can to make your guy very different?

Paul: Well, prior to shooting the pilot, I had never seen Twilight. And I specifically went out of my way to not watch Twilight because I didn’t want it to in any way influence me because I knew that it was a similar subject matter. And now, I’ve actually never watched the movie in its entirety, but I’ve seen parts of it. And, you know, I don’t think that it would be wise for any actor to make any judgments on their character or decisions based on anyone else. I think if there are similarities to Robert Pattinson’s character in Twilight, so be it. I take the scripts (I’m given) and I do my honest, best portrayal. And then any similarities, that’s sort of an aftereffect.

TeenTelevision: You’re going to have the obvious Twilight comparisons. When you finally did see it, did you make any?

Paul: I was impressed. Not to make this (interview) about Twilight, but it has this super sort of youthful following. And I found it pretty engaging, so I was kind of relatively surprised. You know what I mean? I thought it would be a lot campier. I actually liked it, what I saw anyway.

Nina: I watched it as well. But the thing is I read the Twilight books way back and it was before the actual whole vampire, Twilight craze, Rob Pattinson obsession with everyone in the world. So I was unaffected in that sense. And I like them. I really like them. I mean, there’s similarities. There’s vampires in both shows. But they’re different and as the series goes on, it’s going to get more different.

Paul: This is a weekly series, too, so there’s so much going on. There’s so many new relationships. There’s a lot going on with the vampires but then there’s personal relationships between all the characters. There’s non-vampires everywhere.

Katerine: The storyline is very different. It’s not Twilight. It’s not “True Blood.” It’s “The Vampire Diaries.” It’s completely different, and you’ll have to watch it.

TeenTelevision: Paul you have to play a character who is very old and yet is young. Can you talk about the difficulties in doing that?

Paul: First of all, I think that was what was so appealing about this role. I was reading so many pilot scripts. But, as a vampire who is born in the 1860’s, you know, and then has to mask himself as a high schooler, there was nothing like that on TV. I was so, so obsessed with this character. I love this character so much. It’s so challenging for me to do this because Nina and Kat and all the people on the show, we’re the same ageish, and we are all friends so I have to get my head into this place where I’m like “Wait, I’m, like, their grandfather.” You know what I mean? But I’m pretending. It’s really challenging, but fun; and, I think, comes really kind of innately. I really enjoy this.

TeenTelevision: Well, he has discovered the reincarnation or the modern-day version of his ancient love as well.

Paul: And it’s a rebirth. This is a rebirth. He’s been alone, isolated. And this girl that he falls in love with all of a sudden, it’s like he can have that teenage experience and that young-adult experience, that college experience or whatever. It’s the love that he has been lacking for hundreds of years. It’s – so it’s not like he’s putting on a façade and he’s a conman. It’s not like some pervy thing (we laugh). He’s genuinely experiencing all this with the naivete of an 18-year-old kid.

TeenTelevision: Okay, ladies, what is the attraction to the dark brooding type that women find so hot?

Katerina: I think it’s the mystery, right? It’s the mystery.

Nina: There is something about a man who lurks in the dark.

Paul: Yeah, there is something about a man who lurks in the dark. It’s a good thing.

TeenTelevision: I hear that at the CW party, Nina, you stalked Eric from “True Blood.” True?

Nina: He was cool, we hung out with him. He was a cool guy. It was nice. But he is really method. He wouldn’t get out of the accent that he was doing for some movie.

TeenTelevision: In this day of Twitter, does anyone keep a diary or journals anymore? An actual paper diary, not an Internet blog?

Katerina: I keep my diary. I brought it with me to Atlanta and I still write in it.

Nina: When we started, the cast got a diary with “Vampire Diaries” on the front of it. It is really cool.

Katerina: Yeah, I have my regular one and then my character Bonnie Bennett, to help me sync, she has the one that the producers gave us.

Paul: I find it therapeutic to write things down, too.
