In the quiet town of Woodsboro, California, high schooler Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends are terrorized by a masked serial killer known as Ghostface. According to Screen Rant, director Wes Craven had wanted to move away from the horror genre and originally passed on directing Scream, but when he heard an established actress like Barrymore had signed on at her request, Craven convinced himself that the movie would be different from his previous work. Barrymore may only have a minor role, but her chilling performance and character archetype became a significant staple in reviving the slasher genre.

Although they were popular in the '80s, slasher movies overstayed their welcome and gave the horror genre a bad name. The slasher formula was so ubiquitous that slasher movies became derivative, repetitive, and increasingly subpar. Scream fixed this by brutally deconstructing these clichés while still being a terrifying thriller.

Scream's biggest contribution to its genre and pop culture wasn't flipping slasher conventions upside down, but popularizing the meta horror subgenre. These days, slashers need to be at least a bit self-aware to be taken seriously. Even non-horror movies adopted Scream's breaking of the fourth wall, to varying degrees of success.

I did love how Scream came in and was very unique and its own thing. Especially making so many references to other horror movies and cliches. It was also different to just have a regular person be the killer, not some zombie or demon that can never be killed and goes on living forever. Unfortunately, they fell victim to the same thing other horror movies do: Beating a dead horse and continuing to force pointless sequels SMH. They should of stopped at Scream 3, but they can NEVER just let it be.

If you haven't seen this movie, I promise it's more fun and less scary than you think! And it literally, famously re-invented the genre (thank you, Wes Craven) so it's very worth a watch.
