'Uncut Gems' (2019)
Rather than looking at a substance addiction or dependence, Uncut Gems uses its exceedingly intense135-minute runtime to explore a self-destructive gambling addiction in ferocious, relentless detail. It's hard to watch, but admittedly riveting and hard to look away from, being about a man (Adam Sandler) who lives life on the edge, consistently faced with worsening debt, and unable to know when to quit.

It's something of a modern tragedy, being about a protagonist who digs himself deeper and deeper into a hole throughout an entire film. It is undoubtedly about the highs and lows of gambling, whether that be taking risks with money or getting involved with loan sharks, and it's unafraid to show the consequences of what can come with too much thrill-seeking, when finances are involved.

Magic Mike's Last Dance star Salma Hayek opens up about how she felt typecast following her role in the 1996 action-horror film, From Dusk Till Dawn.

Salma Hayek Pinault said that she felt typecast by Hollywood following her role in 1996's From Dusk Till Dawn, and credits Adam Sandler for helping to change that.

In an interview with GQ, Hayek Pinault spoke about her desire to play more comedic roles in her career. However, after appearing as Santanico Pandemonium in Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn, Hayek Pinault felt that she had been typecast into similar roles at the start of her career. That wouldn't change until she met Adam Sandler, who cast her in the 2010 comedy, Grown Ups.

"I was typecast for a long time," she said. "My entire life I wanted to do comedy and people wouldn’t give me comedies. I couldn’t land a role until I met Adam Sandler, who put me in a comedy, but I was in my forties! They said, 'You’re sexy, so you’re not allowed to have a sense of humor,'" Not only are you not allowed to be smart but you were not allowed to be funny in the '90s."

From Dusk Till Dawn, written by Tarantino, is considered a cult horror film and was one of Hayek Pinault's first acting roles in the United States. Grown Ups, meanwhile, showed Hayek Pinault's capabilities in a comedic role. In it, she starred as Roxanne Chase-Feder, a fashion designer and the wife of Sandler's Lenny Feder. Grown Ups also starred Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider.

Despite being best known for his endless stream of gross-out comedies, Adam Sandler is capable of delivering fantastic dramatic performances when given the right material. His best comes in Uncut Gems, the Safdies' crime thriller where Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a jeweler caught in a race against time to pay off his debts or face deadly consequences.

Sandler was lauded for his performance, with many critics claiming it could lead to a career shift for the beloved comedy actor. The Academy did not feel the same way, however, as both Sandler and the movie were snubbed by voters. Fans were outraged, as u/Glioneuronal says both "definitely should have gotten some love."
