Hustle (Netflix)
Hustle sees Adam Sandler go back to the gritty and emotional roles that added depth to his career, reminding us of the Punchdrunk Love days. Oh, but it's not a total indie darling story here, as Sandler is playing a scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who doesn't really want to "trust the process."

Trying to navigate a world filled with talents who are lying through their teeth about their age, Stanley Beren (Sandler) knows how poorly he's perceived by the team's front office (played by Ben Foster and Robert Duvall). So, to prove himself and try to become a coach, he's going rogue and traveling to Spain to recruit a promising athlete.

“Hustle” (2022)
The latest in the seemingly never-ending partnership between Adam Sandler and Netflix is also one of the best. Instead of a silly comedy (like “Hubie Halloween”), “Hustle” is a sports drama, with Sandler playing a washed up scout with dreams of coaching, who stumbles upon an unlikely phenom with a checkered past in Spain (played by actual NBA player Juancho Hernangómez). While “Hustle” doesn’t particularly break new ground, that’s okay. It’s moving and inspiring and expertly shot and edited, with great performances from Sandler and Hernangómez, alongside Queen Latifah (as Sandler’s wife), Robert Duvall (as his boss) and Ben Foster (as his workplace nemesis). Plus, with LeBron James among the producers, there are plenty of cameos by NBA stars past and present (Anthony Edwards is terrific as Hernangómez’s on-court rival). What more do you want?

Once in a while, there comes a film that without much initial fanfare just proceeds to drop our collective jaws, bleeding into our zeitgeist and instantly becoming a larger-than-life experience. ‘Uncut Gems’ is that kind of cinematic shock wave, wrapped and delivered in a two-hour-long adrenaline rush, that is now firmly entrenched in the pantheon of modern classics.

This time around, the Jewish duo employ America’s favorite loser, Adam Sandler, as the walking manifestation of greed — most precisely Howard Ratner, a debt-ridden and compulsive Diamond District jeweler who lives in perpetual pursuit of the next big score. Treading the fine line between a comedy of errors and a dreadful tumble into the abyss, ‘Uncut Gems’ thrusts us into Howard’s latest exploit; a high-stakes gambling spree involving NBA All-Star Kevin Garnett, a smuggled Ethiopian black opal and an ever-growing black hole of mounting debts.

There’s a brazen momentum beaming through the whole runtime that feels contagious if also utterly maddening; during which Howard almost convinces you that he’s thinking five moves ahead instead of actually digging his own grave. The Safdies definitely relish the opportunity of playing evil God with their hapless ticking time-bomb, throwing him curveballs at every turn only to watch him paddle frantically to keep his head above water.

Though choosing one between ‘Good Times’ and ‘Uncut Gems’ boils down to personal preference more than anything else, it’s hard to look past the latter as the Safdies’ most refined effort where their anarchic narrative style finally reached its zenith.

Comedians who got serious
Adam Sandler was in the middle of a run of huge comedies when he made "Punch-Drunk Love" with Paul Thomas Anderson, a role specifically written for Sandler. If you're going to start making dramas, that's a pretty good director to go with. Sandler has continued to mix in dramatic work ever since, from James Brooks' "Spanglish" to his Independent Spirit Award-winning performance in "Uncut Gems." After tasting critical acclaim, the Sandman followed up by playing Hubie Halloween, because he remembers his roots.
