Calgary native Erica Durance of Saving Hope plays Penikett’s wife. [...] Winther also praised Alberta’s “core group of actors”, adding that 80 per cent of the cast are homegrown. Probably the most high-profile Alberta native in the production is Durance, who played Lois Lane for six seasons on Smallville and currently stars in CTV’s medical drama Saving Hope. Curiously, despite being born in Calgary and raised in Three Hills, the actress has never shot in Alberta before. Having filmed all her scenes in Painkillers in two days, her schedule was even more compressed than Feore’s. But it was good to be home, even if it was only briefly. “It’s really lovely to be around fellow Albertans again,” she said. “All these idiosyncrasies that I thought were uniquely me when I was out in the world, I come home to Alberta and say, ‘That’s why I do that.’ Everybody is so friendly and polite and thoughtful.
