Whee! Thanks for opening!

I forgot to link this video last night in my Harvey party excitement:

Jim Parsons hopes Big Bang co-stars see him on Broadway - YouTube

(have to go to work now... be back to catch up later!)

Edit:
I forgot to add back in the last thread that I totally laughed at his request for Almond Milk and Shredded Wheat...spoken like a true Californian...

TFTNT! Very appropriate title.

First things first - opening night pics.

Photo Coverage: Spot the Rabbit! HARVEY Opening Night Curtain Call; Parsons, Hecht, Kane, Kimbrough & More

Sparkling eyes. He looks so happy.

June - thanks for the short interview!

Nerdy - would love to read any inputs you've collected. And regarding Jim's weight.. I do think he's lost some, right now, under the pressure of 8 shows per week, but I definitely don't think he'll let himself get to a 2010 state again. As you say, I'm surprised he allowed it to happen even then - he seems to be such a balanced, emotionally stable person. I guess endorphin addiction can get anyone.

On that note.. some quotes from reviews.

Quote:
Wearing a carefree smile that frequently explodes into infectious delight, Parsons is all impeccable manners and imperturbable contentment, fully convincing as a man who appears never to have had an uncharitable thought in his life. And yet there’s not the slightest hint of simple-mindedness. Without ever winking at the audience, his winning performance conveys a strong sense of being the most grounded person onstage.
Harvey: Theater Review - The Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
Most important, Mr. Parsons carries the weight of a role immortalized on film by the inimitable James Stewart as lightly as Elwood does the hat and coat he keeps on hand for his furry companion. The breakout star of the popular sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” the soft-spoken Mr. Parsons makes an ideal Elwood, the drinker and dreamer who passes his days in the company of Harvey, doing little more than sitting around saloons making friendly conversation with whoever happens by. Mr. Parsons possesses in abundance the crucial ability to project an ageless innocence without any visible effort: no small achievement for an actor in these knowing times.
‘Harvey,’ With Jim Parsons, at Studio 54 - NYTimes.com

Quote:
The revelation here, aside from David Rockwell's stunning revolving sets, is Parsons. After a promising but tentative Broadway debut last year in A Normal Heart, the preternaturally boyish actor commands the stage in a surprisingly offhanded way. He rivets your attention without any big gestures or look-at-me grandstanding — and without merely delivering a Jimmy Stewart impression. Instead, he captures the essence of Stewart while making an old-fashioned character seem refreshingly modern. It's as if he's internalized Elwood's forthright embrace of the whimsically absurd. ''I've wrestled with reality most of my life,'' he says at one point, in a Sheldon-like deadpan. ''I'm happy to state I've won out over it.'
Harvey Review | News Reviews and News | Stage | EW.com

Quote:
'Although Mary Chase's classic comedy "Harvey" is still performed by high schools and community groups, Scott Ellis' highly enjoyable revival for the Roundabout Theatre Company marks the play's first Broadway production in more than 40 years.

This is probably the result of Jimmy Stewart's indelible performance in the 1950 film version. How many contemporary actors have the guts to compete against his memory?

Enter Jim Parsons, who's received two Emmy Awards for his brilliant work play self-loving, socially awkward geek Sheldon Cooper on "The Big Bang Theory." He made his Broadway debut last season with a supporting role in "The Normal Heart.

In an effortless and charming performance, Parsons is wonderful as Elwood P. Dowd, the happy-go-lucky, very caring barfly whose best friend is Harvey - a 6-foot tall rabbit that only he can see.

Parsons' Elwood is not unlike a sweet and innocent child who is far more likable and trustworthy compared to the overstressed, often silly adults around him.
Theater Review: 'Harvey' -- 3.5 stars - am New York

Quote:
The actor Jim Parsons has become famous playing a quirky physicist on TV's The Big Bang Theory, and now he's on Broadway, doing wonderful justice to a character with a completely different set of quirks.

While Parsons' Dr. Sheldon Cooper is a fussy guy who sticks religiously to a routine and lacks empathy and social skills, Parsons in Broadway's revival of "Harvey" plays an accepting man overloaded with empathy and social skills so literal, they allow him no room for sarcasm or even a touch of irony.

Jimmy Stewart made the role indelible in a 1950 film adaptation (and he played in the 1970 Broadway revival), as a serious, almost intense, Elwood P. Dowd. Now comes Parsons, giving us a happy-go-lucky Dowd, without a care in the world — unless it's for other people. He's a guileless guy who understands what happiness means. No wonder everyone calls him "peculiar."

It's good and often silly fun, greatly enriched by Parson's performance. His Dowd walks through life much like TV's late and beloved Mr. Rogers, with that same sort of googly twang, aw-shucks inflection, nonjudgmental manner and gentleness of spirit.
Broadway review: ‘Harvey' - Philly.com

Quote:
Elwood is a role that has attracted a host of stars, from its originator, the vaudevillian Frank Fay, to Stewart, who replaced Fay in the original Broadway run and starred in the 1950 film, and Art Carney, of "The Honeymooners" fame, who played it on TV in 1958. Jim Parsons isn't much like any of those gentlemen, but he makes Elwood his own in an impressive turn. Chase describes Elwood as "dignified" yet "dreamy," "benign" yet "serious," and Parsons takes her at her word with wonderful stylization while adding just the slightest touch of dry humor. He is so convincing in his give-and-take with Harvey that we almost begin to see the mischievous sprite. Parsons stresses Elwood's concern for others and generosity of spirit, undergirding it with a touch of steel. He's terrific.
NY Review: 'Harvey'

Quote:
If the term summer stock were not so besmirched with straw hats and desperation, the Roundabout's production, starring the sweetly formidable Jim Parsons, could be thought of as Broadway's excellent summer vacation. Parsons, in a small but significant stretch from the haute-geek he plays on TV's "The Big Bang Theory," does not shirk from creating an Elwood P. Dowd who stands tall yet somehow separate from the long, bright shadow cast by Jimmy Stewart in the 1950 movie.

Parsons, who showed his serious depth last season in "The Normal Heart," plays Elwood with lovely, benign obliviousness, the curl of a crooked smile and a way of squinting eye contact that particularly connects with women. He has a formal yet intimate relationship with his invisible friend, a mannerly chivalry that extends to lonely strangers, pub mates and loved ones trying to get him committed and take his money.
'Harvey': Don't mind the invisible rabbit

Quote:
The cast is a wonderful mix of familiar names and young talents. Charles Kimbrough, Larry Bryggman and Carol Kane discover wells of dimension in supporting roles. But the show belongs to the marvelously animated Jessica Hecht as the excitable Veta and Jim Parsons' sweetly irresistible Elwood.

It's a beautifully calibrated portrait of an all too gentle soul who's figured out the secret to happiness with a rabbit for a friend and liquor as tonic. It's the kind of high-calibre performance even imagination can't improve on.
NY1 Theater Review: "Harvey" - NY1.com

Quote:
it’s unlikely that this wrinkly chestnut, immortalized by the 1950 movie with James Stewart, would have returned to Broadway without a star. The Roundabout revival that opened last night has one in Jim Parsons, the Emmy-winning lead of TV’s “The Big Bang Theory,” who turns out to be the perfect choice for Elwood P. Dowd.

The role is a tricky one: We have to empathize with a guy who may be totally nuts — or alcoholic, or both.

Nobody else can see Elwood’s long-eared best friend, Harvey, but that doesn’t stop our hero from talking to him, or saving him a place at the table. Parsons’ deft touch with physical comedy is put to good use, and his open, guileless face inspires instant trust. His Elwood is sweet without being goopy.
Jim Parsons is a fine eccentric in wholesome Broadway revival of 'Harvey' - NYPOST.com

Quote:
The new Broadway season began nicely on Thursday with a sweet and funny revival of “Harvey” starring “Big Bang Theory” actor Jim Parsons, who’s downright adorable as Elwood P. Dowd.

Never intimating that his character is a lush, Parsons lends the gentlemanly Elwood a calm and slightly dreamy manner that contrasts against the other characters, who more or less are driven into a frenzy by his chum Harvey’s unseen presence. Parsons’ open, friendly countenance and genial nature as Elwood are unassuming yet sufficiently engaging to provide the production with its glowing focal point.

His eyes. His lips. His fingers.

Chloe - what was the shock therapy for?

I've been smiling all day today, impeded only by AP, WSJ and Variety.. and that too not for long.

What made me smile even wider was the following comment in the BWW review thread.

Quote:
These are fine reviews, and they make me wonder if HBO or even a network might want to do a TV film. Parsons is a TV star, and he's scored some of the best press any television actor has managed in recent years. It would be a smart commercial move, if the rights are offered, and they could streamline the play.
I know it's not likely, and Jim's other commitments would also make it difficult; but my first reaction was - universe, are you listening?

Is Chloe trying to kill me so she can pry the Harvey ticket from my cold, dead fingers?

Pom - Thanks for the collection of glowing reviews. It sounds like this character is closer to Jim's personality than anything we've seen, sans the imaginary friend and the drinking problem, of course.

The video that June posted and his comment about the side show during a vacation are precious. What do y'all think that Jim would do if I tell him that I literally scheduled an 8 hour layover in NYC on my way home just to see him? I think he'd say 'thank you' and discreetly turn to his bodyguard and ask him to keep an eye on the crazy lady.

Oh, TFTNT!

what the!? You're going to a play during a layover!? That's awesome.

I had a couple of friends who visited London that way...they had a 6 hour layover and so they did a little sight seeing. (it was my idea btw...)
