Reference Thread #1
Okay, here's a thread to comment if our show is mentioned somewhere and to point out the references they make in the show, all geek, of course...
I thought we should also use this thread to clarify some of the nerds jokes, about physics, chemistry and etc... I'll add more things later Last edited by Nitinha; 02-01-2009 at 10:52 AM |

Can I just squee about something? Of course I can. Anyway. There was one part where they were turning on the stereo remotely in season 1. And then the music they were playing was 'Also Spake Zarathustra' by Richard Strauss, which is the opening music for 2001: A Space Odyssey. I didn't recognise the reference the first time I saw the episode because I hadn't seen 2001 then. But when I was watching the season 1 DVDs with my sister I recognised it and I was freaking out. 2001 is one of my favourite movies and to hear it on BBT, seeing the characters freak out just like I was... amazing. It gave me such a buzz the entire day.
This is the piece of music I'm talking about, by the way. __________________

I had no idea what that even belonged to...you learn something new with the show and the fans every day.
I get a little squee any time anything Superman-related is brought up, of course. That includes Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and kryptonite. And all the Battlestar Galactica references: Michael Trucco (who played David Underhill in the Christmas episode is from BSG), Sheldon talking about watching the DVDs with commentary, Howard saying "What the frak?", and Sheldon's frequent conversations of cylons. |

If you don't mind, you should really give 2001 a try. It's not an easy film by any means, but it's very inspiring. Kubrick at his best, IMO. And the music is legendary. Not just this but also 'The Blue Danube' by Johann Strauss and some Liegeti as well... and I love how the four of them love this movie. It's right up their alley.
I don't know a lot of the references, but they're fun anyway. __________________

If you recommend it, I'll definitely look into checking it out. I do actually like a lot of things that the guys on the show are interested in, so it might be up my alley too.

Really? Aww. But I really do have to warn you though, it is difficult to watch - a lot of it is without dialogue (I think Wall.E probably borrowed that from 2001 for its first 20 minutes - and this isn't completely OT because Wall.E was probably the inspiration for MONT.E/Monte), slow, no proper narrative. I hope you like it though, if you do watch it!

I'm actually okay with movies without dialogue. But is it hard to follow/understand? I know that are a lot of movies out there if you don't understand one little thing, you don't understand or get the whole damn movie.

^Wall-E's first 20 minutes really were inspired by 2001. The creator of the movie said so himself in an interview or something to that effect And I think everyone should give 2001 a try. It's a really amazing movie.
I love the references in the show... be it the sci fi, movies and tv shows stuff, or the physical stuff like time travel or worm holes. It's rare to see that type of stuff talked about and they do it so well on the show. __________________

Ohhhh, I can't remember if I've seen 2001, but I love that song, I freaked out when someone thought it was from Star Wars
I'm not very much of a geek, the only thing I love I guess that can be considered geek is Star Wars, so I love any reference they make to it. But I'm a huge nerd and I love when they talk about physics, chemistry and biology (mostly, I suck at Math ) |

What was the end of the episode where Sheldon is hiding or something and the janitors come in referring too? I don't think I'm being clear, but...

You mean the one that he tries to learn to drive and end up moving to the University, right?
It's from The Phantom of The Opera |
