Behrian Book Club #4: Africa, Alligators, we love books

We were discussing books we like, and everything in between...

Oh, I didn't realize the author of "Carrying Albert Home" was Homer Hickam, who wrote the 'Rocket Boys' book that was made into that lovely movie with Jake Gyllenhall..(finally ordered a used copy)

ML you are on a roll...thanks for another new thread!!

That is a good solution to the too many books dilemma....I think some of our just need to get thrown out...text books ( not me) and just ones nobody would want to read but then there are others....I might ask the nursing home if they want some but I don't see many people there that are up to reading but there are a couple.

I made what I think is a dumb purchase the other night..it was late that will be my excuse I didn't know SM had written a kinda new Twilight..for the 10 anniversary....a little bit tweaked version of Twilight plus (unfortunately she didn't finish Midnight Sun which I actually really enjoyed...the part she did)..... a version of Twilight with the lead characters changing roles....the girl is the vamp the boy the human....I read the sample and was like oh I'm just doing it....but so far it isn't cutting it. I'm gonna stick with it for now but it kind of is just Twilight with all the sexes reversed and the story is almost verbatim the same. Did you know that was out there ML I think it is called Life and Death.

Oh gosh PodMom I saw a stack of those books in Barnes & Noble bookstore (?stack because nobody is buying it) and I couldn't believe it! She just rewrote the whole thing other way 'round and it seemed like such a naked 'money grab' - nothing new to say, so let's cash in on the cash cow of Twilight one more time - I was kind of offended! Midnight Sun was very good, as far as it went (from Edward's POV instead of Bella's), and I'm sorry she stopped writing it (somebody leaked it and she got furious about it) but this...

Waiting for the big snowstorm to arrive, although not supposed to be too big up here, supposed to veer off to sea - PHEW! I'd planned not to go anywhere til Monday, if it was snowy, but Mr ML wanted to send some books to my son (that 4-book scifi series I got him for Hanukah), so I helped him box them up this morning and then the milk was sort of off too (need milk for tea with Barbara), so I raced off to the postoffice and the store to get milk (and some candy bars to weather the storm with ) and rushed home again to hunker down - thought I saw one snowflake, but when I checked the weather after I got home, they pushed the time back when the snow would come until early afternoon. I hurried so much because they'd said 10 a.m. and it was about 9:30 when I went out.

Didn't bring home any work either, because I thought Mlette was coming, but she called and reminded me she had plans with her friends today (and new fellow wanted to take her outdoor iceskating - in a blizzard? Doesn't he know she has Raynaud's and can't stand the cold? guess not). Funny Mr ML and I went ice skating on an outdoor pond on our second date too. First and only time we skated. I didn't know him well at all and was sure he was driving me out into the woods to kill me! Luckily, I was wrong!

I'm looking forward to getting that alligator story! It's on the way. Something different from my endless mindless rounds of 'cozy' mysteries.

Really they made actual paper books of this? ..yes indeed greedy money grab I was in a weakened (state haven't had a fun light read for too long) plus it was late at night...that is my lame excuse. I'm actually wondering if she payed some assistant to "write" it by just substituting girls makes and plugging in the other book.

At this point I don't buy the "she's mad" about the leak I think she just is too absorbed with cashing in on easier ways and maybe doesn't have the inspiration anymore it is what it is and she has the right to do anything but I just can't imagine she needs the money at this point but who knows.

No Flannery...

It just seemed like a 'writing exercise' to me, more than anything else, just substitute X for Y and rewrite the same book again!

$$$$$$$$$

I've actually stuck with it cause I just don't have anything else unread on my kindle and I payed for it and deserve to have to read it

So I'm at the sparkly skin in the sun part. I will say at this point the story is changed enough..not much but enough that she did actually have to write it but she had to be copy pasting like mad.

Still waiting for my alligator book to come...

Well, one would hope she would write it a little differently, since she's going to all the trouble of doing it over again.. Gosh I LOVED Twilight so much, I was totally mad and obsessed and read only those books, over and over obsessively for months and months and now.. so over it. Although I'm still sleeping under my Edward afghan (while Mr ML snoozes under my Roswell blanket).

Yes, most writers write books to make money, plain and simple - my niece has launched a somewhat successful romance novel writing career (which is handy timing, as her husband got laid off, is looking for another job, and they have a couple of kids starting college etc). She has no illusions that she's writing the next Great American Novel, she's always just aspired to write romance novels so she's achieved her goal! Very proud of her (even though I can't bring myself to read that stuff..) Mr ML was curious so I bought/downloaded her first book onto the Kindle and he was shocked, shocked I tell you, at the smutty writing.

It amazes me how some writers can just crank these things out, often doing 2 or 3 different series at the same time - and at least with the mystery stories I read, some of them are quite good/interesting/well written. I really wish I had that knack/imagination, to come up with those characters, and a mystery for them to solve, and then another, and then another! Mary Daheim wrote 30+ books in two different series! And I'm sure other writers have done even more. Impressive.

yea I loved Twilight too I guess my fondness for that fun time is propelling me through this one but you know I think having the character of the one being protected by the vampire being a male and the vampire being a woman just isn't cutting it. I'm not being anti feminist Ekua don't get worked up but there just is that natural man protect woman sexual tension thing and reversing it just isn't working why oh why did she not just finish Midnight Sun....SO SO stupid and frustrating for us fans

Cool about your niece regardless that she is writing smutty trashy books I've never read a romance novel yet....they'd probably shock me too
