keepsmiling my Dad was a slide rule guy, too. When he died, my husband took his slide rule (in the leather holster with his name carved on it); he thought maybe my son would want it. I was glad when calculators came in, because slide rules gave me trouble (figuring out the decimal place). Math, not my strong suit! My poor Dad, my brother and I both were terrible at math (like my Mom) and he was an engineer. Frustrating for him.

I remember when the first pocket calculators came out, they were SO expensive, maybe $250? My college chemistry professor got one and he was SO excited! LOL! And now they give them away for free.

Thanks for the new thread Ekua that other one was running way long!

What a day today - I got up and the fence guys were here (again) to fix the fence (one more time), and at the same time, Barbara passed out - yet again - and wanted Mr ML to take her to the hospital, and he was halfway out the door to play basketball at the Y (his new obsession) and he was so angry not to be able to go. She ended up going off in an ambulance after the police and fire truck came first! And didn't she turn up at 3 that afternoon, looking for her keys - she's fine. She's always fine. She has a fainting/seizure disorder. SIGH. She need to move to assisted living. And she was fine the whole tine they did the in-home brain scan thing (like a Holter heart monitor only for your head) and two days after they came and took it off, she had another attack. :(

MLette came over today too. We all went out for lunch, she watched the tape of Sunday's football game (who knew I have a daughter who watched football) - oh, sorry PodMom about your Eagles team. The Patriots just keep winning - everybody hates them (except in New England).

My basketball team is doing well, they lost the first game, then won 10 in a row, but then they lost the last one. They're on a road trip on the West Coast and playing pretty hard teams. Tonight they're playing against Phoenix, where the guy who was my favorite Celtic just got traded to, so they'll be playing against him. Should be interesting!

Funny the fence guy asked if I'd lived here all my life, and I said "No, only 40 years" and then I realized, wow, that's a large portion of my life. And he said for some people, that's their whole lives (people 40 and under). LOL! They FINALLY fixed my fence, it's in a straight line, on the property line - only took them THREE tries to do it!

keepsmiling7 11-19-2019 06:41 AM

ML.......Barbara does need to go to assisted living sooner than later. You and MrML can't always be available to care for her.

podmom 11-19-2019 06:45 AM

3 tries....crazy

I know the Eagles blew it....after a good start.....Wentz struggles and coach did too. My brother came over a watched it with me which was nice....podad generally doesn't watch football with me and his wife doesn't. I'm one of the few women that like to watch football married to a non football watcher  I'm glad for you guys the Patriots won but yea we really wanted to beat them

MyrnaLynne 11-19-2019 12:07 PM

Mr ML was shocked that the Eagles fans started booing their own team! He that that was very bad form. :) It's nice you can enjoy that with your brother PodMom. My brother is a sports hater/avoider, like I was before I retired and got into Celtics basketball. I have no patience with football. I did sit through some of it with my daughter, when she watched the rerun, but I couldn't sit and watch all of it.

Meanwhile, Celtics beat Phoenix Suns last night, won 11, lost 2. :D But one of the best guys twisted his ankle. I hate how much they get hurt, sometimes minor, sometimes out for months or for the rest of the year. :( It's a very physical game.

Yes, how awful is that fence company, to have to come out two more times to fix it/not do it right the first time? That owner must be losing money, if he has to keep doing jobs over and over again.

Yes keepsmiling my husband and I don't want to be responsible for his sister-in-law and have to be at her beck and call for everything. :( I think she hopes to live where she is until she dies, but I can't see that being possible, as she lives on the 2nd floor (like we do) and it's a lot of stairs. Plus being by herself... :sigh: She's just very childish/childlike and hasn't thought anything through - she has no plans. Everybody should make plans!

oops......we were one the second page again....

MyrnaLynne 11-22-2019 02:15 PM

Yes, we're 'slipping'! This is a hard time, with the holidays, although I think FF makes allowances; they know people are busy with Christmas and real-life stuff this time of year.

Oh Barbara came over to tea yesterday, Mlette was here, and she said "Oh I was fine, I could have walked down the stairs" after her passing out spell, when Mr ML called the ambulance for her, because she was all fainty and weak and couldn't even stand up by herself, and he couldn't get her down the stairs to the car. Now she's singing a different tune! Mr ML heard her say that and he was  Next time she cries wolf, he won't be so quick to run and help her, I don't think. (Well, of course he'll help her - he's a kind person - but he wont' be happy about it).

He was so kind, we went to a party at the hospital where I worked - they were unveiling a painting of my former boss, who has worked there 50+ years (she came as a medical resident I think, never left). Anyway, guy on crutches was at our table, and hubby offered to get him a drink, or get food for him. He is a genuinely kind person.

The painting was really beautiful of her. And they gave everybody a post card print of the picture, as a parting gift, after the party. I thought that was very nice! I think she was pleased that we came for her special occasion.

Rainy and gloomy here today - that seems to be October and November! Glad I went out earlier and took a walk before it started raining. It's hubby's monthly poker night with the guys tonight. He cleans the house like crazy before they come - oh well, house gets cleaned once a months! :embarrassment:

ML.........your hubby does sound like a kind and caring person.

During this busy holiday season, I have two friends dealing with cancer treatments. One with breast cancer and the other with both liver and lung cancer. I need to put aside some of the shopping time and visit with these two ladies. One really sounded depressed when I talked to her earlier, and ask us to come over and share some Christmas cheer.

Hi PODMOM.......are you packing up for Thanksgiving at OC?

JournalingJedi 11-25-2019 04:22 PM

Not an older fan since I’m younger then Jason, but bumping this for Podmom!!

podmom 11-25-2019 05:13 PM

JJ Thanks so much for the kind bump!!!!

keepsmiling I'm sorry about your two friends :( yes much more important to visit and comfort them. WHile we are talking about the scourge of cancer.....Abi has had more bad news ( Liz's friend the young mother that has ben battling cancer for years now) it has gone from her lungs/brain ( for the past year or so) to her liver and bones :( she is getting more chemo...again :( ….. she is so brave.....she was wearing brightly colored wigs for the chemo treatments and is trying to be a light from the Lord to other victims ….she has prayed and shared with a few so far. Pray for her...she needs a miracle.

Yes I was packing up...in OC now. Did a GIANT shop today....baking and cole slaw tomorrow. I think you are hosting? Am I right?

ML Wow that is cool and pretty awesome for your boss to have such an event. I'm sure she really appreciated you guys coming. Mr ML is very kind  I know he is annoying too but all husbands are at times ;) Barbara is a problem for sure :sigh:

Thank you PODMOM........for making sure we don't slip.........and thanks to JJ for her help.

No I am not hosting Thanksgiving, we're going to Houston to hubby's daughter. She loves to cook and will have kids home from college. It will be a real treat for us not to have to cook, and to see the grandkids home too. My two sons go to out to our family ranch, it's hunting season for them. My daughter will head up to the Dallas area to be with her late husband's family. We're scattered everywhere, but there will be lots of good food and family where ever anyone is.

MyrnaLynne 11-29-2019 03:51 PM

My son ended up going to Thanksgiving with a coworker, because his wife is feuding with her brother, who invited them! She is always fighting with somebody (or everybody). :( At least he got a meal!

keepsmiling I'm so sorry for your friends battling cancer. It's very good to visit and bring some cheer. The people behind us, who entertained all those folks - the young wife is battling cancer, wears one of those turbans (or as I call them 'cancer hats'). I wonder if they didn't move here, to be close to the Boston hospitals and get some new treatments.

Wow, got up with a burst of energy, now that Thanksgiving is behind us. I got the step ladder and put away the fancy serving dishes on the top china closet shelf, put away the big serving spoons and forks etc, polished a couple of tarnished ones I found in the drawer, scrubbed the gravy off the stovetop, and baked cranberry/orange scones! All before my daughter arrived - she had the day off, her BF had to work today, poor guy (I packed him a Thanksgiving leftover lunch to take to work today, when they left last night),:D and we had Thanksgiving dinner all over again.

We didn't want to face Black Friday, so hung around. We had free HBO, so she and I watched the (new) Nancy Drew movie - she said we'd seen the coming attraction with another movie and it looked cute (I didn't remember) but it was good. Kids scary movies are about the level of scary stuff I can handle!

Speaking of not remembering, I looked at how long to bake those scones and totally forgot to set the timer! Luckily I realized it and kept an eye on them, and I've baked them before, so I knew what they looked like when they were done. Phew! I got distracted when my daughter arrived.

Oops, here's Barbara looking for her tea...
