Friday Night Lights OT Thread #17: Because Why Would You Wanna Leave Dillon?
The all encompassing Friday Night Lights thread to discuss any and all actors from the show and just the show in general because even though it's been 10-years since it premiered it remains one of the most beloved shows out there. And even we sometimes have to admit the show was about more than just Tim Riggins.
"Inspired by the legendary Buzz Bissinger book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, and the 2004 Peter Berg movie based on it, FNL told the story of a high school football coach from Dillon, Texas, whose improbable victories mirrored those of the critically beloved — but disastrously rated — show itself. In an era when sports television was supposedly at its nadir, when elite storytelling was supposedly only the work of prestige outlets like HBO and AMC, Friday Night Lights emerged as the quintessential show about American spirit and uplift at a time when the moral and economic bedrock of our Country seemed most in doubt. Gone too soon. Appreciated too little. Treasured by those who followed it. That was Friday Night Lights." -Grantland Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Couldn't Lose - An Oral History of Friday Night Lights |

Thanks for the new thread A! I saw we needed one, but wasn't near my laptop...you know how that goes. You beat me to it.

Ok, so I'm a few episodes into season 2 and what I can't wrap my head around is the inconsistencies with the characters. In one episode, Lyla catches Jason with Suzy and throws her engagement ring at him and tells him she's done. Next thing ya know, her, Tim & Jason are hanging out together in Mexico where she kisses Tim in front of Jason, and the next couple of episodes, she's friends with Jason again. I just don't get the fickleness of the characters. Maybe because I'm not like that. When my ex-fiance & I broke up, that was it! We didn't speak or talk to each other ever again.

I feel like a select few of the cast members (like the ones doing the podcasts) are living vicariously through this show even though it ended in 2011 while Taylor is like "yeah it was fun while it lasted but it's over and I'm letting it go and moving on to other things even though I'm still friends with everyone". I could be wrong, but it just seems like he wants to leave the show in the past unlike others. |

Lyla is a hot mess the first two seasons. I think she had her future planned out and when Jason had his accident that just upturned her life. Also, Buddy doesn’t help matters either with his behavior and the upheaval that brings. She becomes more centered in Season 3 but she just never seems content regardless of who she is in a relationship with.
I think some cast members careers were defined and highlighted by the show while others are happy to move on and build off of it. Taylor is certainly in the latter category but he doesn’t (so far) turn his nose up at making appearances on the podcasts. I think everyone still speaks highly of the show and the experience even after all the years that have passed. Derek & Stacey were a great match on the show but neither of them have achieved that same success post FNL so it makes sense for them to relive their glory days. Scott has been fairly successful post FNL but his character was the reason for doing the show so I can understand why he would want to share his experience. I can’t explain Zach pairing with him other than they are good friends IRL. |

The show is fairly iconic so those who haven't had another big hit post FNL pretty much are defined by the show. It is still often listed in the top 20 or 30 shows of all time. I think all of them have such an affection for the show as well because a lot of them said it was like college, it was a masterclass in improv and they all loved it so much.

I'm not actually surprised you hadn't heard about it. During its initial run it was criminally underrated. The critics loved it but it was marketed poorly and the audience was not catching on, people thought it was just a show about football. It finally got some awards show recognition in its last few seasons but never really turned into a well known show until it hit Netflix maybe in 2013 or 2014, somewhere around there, that's when it started really taking off and had a rebirth.

It was one of my favorite shows (my husbands too) and it really was under appreciated when it aired. As a fan, it was frustrating that it was always on the chopping block and that Direct TV got first dibs on airing it and unless you subscribed you had to wait until it aired on NBC. The writers strike also didn’t help it gain popularity and Season 2 was just an unfinished mess.

I was in college while it was airing and doing an internship and my boss (essentially) had DirecTV so he legitimately taped it for me when it aired first, because it was like months before it would air on NBC and NBC cut out about 15 minutes of extra footage that DirecTV aired. So that is how I watched season 3 on, until I figured out that I could just download the bootleg online after it aired.

I didn’t watch it when it aired either. I had a friend suggest it. I complained that it was a football show. He said, it’s not. I still didn’t watch it.
I don’t even remember now when I started watching it. I remember when JC came out, I didn’t know who Taylor was. I remember Lee talking about the movie and this “no name” was the lead. __________________

As a fan from day one, I didn’t appreciate that Direct TV got to air an extended episode that the rest of us never got to see. I’ve always wanted to know what was in that extra content. It would’ve been great if they were consistent and aired the exact same episode on NBC.
I only watched FNL and never saw any of his movies until Lone Survivor. I knew he was in Savages but never watched it until years later. I only watched John Carter because he was in it and it was painfully ridiculous. I know it has a cult following but I still don’t understand why. |
