Wolverine’ Mutant Taylor Kitsch To Star In Not-What-You-Expected ‘Battleship’ Movie Before X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we didn’t know much about Taylor Kitsch, and even since his turn as the Southern gambling mutant, Gambit, we haven’t seen him often. But what Kitsch has done since then, is set himself up for some major stardom. It’s being reported that Taylor Kitsch has been cast to star in Peter Berg’s feature based on the popular board game, Battleship, in which players strategically place their fleet of ships, and then proceed to fire back and forth at each other until someone’s fleet has been completely submerged. The project is one of a handful of currently in-development films based on Hasbro games and toys. Aside from his theatrical breakout in Wolverine, Kitsch has mainly been busy as a regular on the hit show Friday Night Lights, which was actually developed by Berg. With that show set to end after its fifth season, other opportunities have begun flowing in steadily. The first big casting that he grabbed was the lead in Pixar alum Andrew Stanton’s much-buzzed science fiction adventure, John Carter of Mars, which many expect to be huge. With the addition of Battleship to his schedule, the sky’s the limit. The strange thing about this report, is that there’s apparently a hell of a lot more going on in Battleship than we once thought. Naturally, we all just assumed that it would be a naval action/drama along the lines of Crimson Tide, Hunt for the Red October, or maybe even Down Periscope, right? Berg even shared his passion for a naval film when he was hired: I’ve been consumed with doing one of these since I tried to convince Tom Rothman at Fox to make a film about John Paul Jones, the founder of the American Navy,” Berg said. “As a kid, I was dragged from Navy museum to museum, and spent so much time on ships, listening to my father talk about the great battles of WWII, I did my high school thesis on the Battle of Midway. When this came up, it didn’t take me long to find a taker for a film that is filled with raucous action-packed naval battles.Nope, not even close. Apparently the movie, written by Jon and Erich Hoeber, will deal with an “alien invasion” in which an international ship fleet having to “battle a water-bound armada of otherworldly origin.” Didn’t see that coming, did you? Feels a lot like a late April Fools joke, but this does not appear to be the case. According to /Film, the aliens are called The Regents, and they’re not here to fight, but seek a new power source from our own oceans. This leads to their confrontation with the naval fleet. Apparently the movie will also tell a dual-story from both the human and alien perspectives. Kind of like Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, but with Battleship…and aliens. In February, The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner was actually in talks to take this role in Battleship, but ultimately had to decline, possibly for his role James McTeigue’s The Raven.

Hopper isn’t simply one of the lead parts — it’s the lead part. The character is a young naval officer who, we’re told, leads the humans’ battle against the invading aliens. Yes, there are aliens — this isn’t exactly the “B-9? You sunk my battleship” version. More casting to come, though it’ll be a while before you can see the movie: it doesn’t come out until May 2012. That should give you almost enough time to finish a full game of Battleship.

Here's the quickie version: •Battleship will follow a small fleet of American and international (ie: Japanese) ships (5 in total) that for some reason get separated from the rest of the Navy and must take on an opposing fleet of alien ships that have arrived on earth in order to build some sort of "bridge" that will help their alien race in some way. •These aliens are called The Regents (which has nothing to do with the High School exam ... we think), and they're not here to destroy earth or humankind -- they're just here to use the planet to help save their own species. However, they will defend themselves if provoked, and, well, what else are we to use our giant massive Naval ships for? •The aliens will be a mix of human actors and CGI. Berg compared them to Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. •The Regents aren't all that superior to us either, as Berg noted that the fight will be a fair one. The story will be more strategic, like the game, in that it will focus on each party (human and alien) using their skills to locate and destroy the other before they themselves are destroyed. •And yes, someone will say "You sunk my Battleship!" at some point during the film.

Oh, Alexander Skarsgård, how you made us swoon when you walked out at the Emmy's and presented using your Eric Northman accent, and how you then proceeded to confuse the heck out of us when you talked with a southern twang at the HBO Emmy's after party. You're a method actor, we understand, but you just finished wrapping a Swedish film, for goodness sake! Shouldn't you be talking with a bit of a Swedish lilt? Unless, that is, you were just getting in character for "Battleship," which you flew out to start filming today. We don't know for sure if Alexander will be playing a southern commander, but we wouldn't put it past the film pitting the US Navy against invading aliens. Alexander was willing to shed some light on the upcoming film when we spoke to him on the red carpet. "It's quite different from the board game obviously. But Pete [Berg] is a great guy, the director, and a very interesting filmmaker, so I'm just excited to start it," he said. We would be excited to start filming too if our costars included the lovely and talented Brooklyn Decker, Rihanna and Taylor Kitsch. Though we didn't find out if he was practicing that down south accent for the film, Alexander did tell us, "I play a commander of one of the destroyers in the US Navy, so um, that's a big gun." As to whether or not we'd be seeing him in 3-D, Alexander was not as forthcoming, only saying, "Uhh, no, I don't think so."
