Loved doing the rewatch with you guys.
From the last thread: Here is a photo with the guys and the women of The Talk with Danny and Axe's wives. And Taylor with Axe's wife, on the left, at a Lone Survivor Foundation event last year. |

You're so awesome! I was too busy reading the account of the illegal Internet to do it!

Thanks for the article link. I have another book question now, due to the article. The article says, "When darkness fell, the SEAL started walking. He was exhausted, scared and dying of thirst, but he pushed on. The next day, he wrote, he stumbled upon a waterfall, where he drank a bit and cleaned his wounds."
Does the actual book say Marcus started walking with his back broken? I could imagine crawling, but walking with a broken back sounds pretty, let's just say, difficult. To be honest, I don't know what to believe. And I don't have a horse in this race. But while I normally take people at their word (and have been called naive because of it, sadly), I'm prone to believe that in he-said/he-said situations, the real truth lies somewhere in the middle. Though the fact that the book writer, Robinson, supposedly kept Marcus' cut of the book advance, rather than either donating it or splitting it with Gulab, makes me question his moral judgment, for sure. Photo no. 3 above, the big one with Taylor looking down, where was that from? It's striking. Also, thanks for the song info. It sort of sounded like Peter Gabriel but also didn't. His voice is so distinct normally. Last edited by KitscherSunk; 08-21-2016 at 10:20 PM |

I do distinctly remember him writing about not being able to walk and that he crawled looking for water. I think something like five miles he crawled, maybe longer than that. So no, initially there was no walking. I think that it is probably somewhere in between, though the language barrier was probably an issue and it was probably mostly due to miscommunication. Marcus did attempt to have him moved to the States for a long time. We don't know what went on behind the scenes with Marcus and the government and how they felt about all of this and bringing him over. There may be more to the story that Marcus is just keeping his mouth shut about. Clearly there was a time when they wondered just how genuine and unconnected Gulab was with the terrorist groups over there. I do think it's a damn shame that he's here now and is receiving no assistance. That photo is just a still from the movie, it was one of the promotional photos they released. |

I always wonder how they find and get all the soldiers bodies back? Did they do a mission back in to go find them? That has to be difficult.

It's been bugging me since I wrote it because while trying to sound neutral I think I gave the wrong impression. What I meant was I was taking Marcus at his word. But after reading that article, it's hard to dismiss Gulab's allegations altogether.
It bothers me that the article writer becomes part of the story. He was pretty balanced overall, I think, and followed the basic rules of journalism (giving Marcus and others a chance to refute the claims), but I think it would've been better to have another journalist with no ties write the story, using this writer as just a source like all the rest. I think miscommunication has a lot to do with it. I'd hope if the government had any questions about any ties to terrorists, he and his family wouldn't have been allowed to move here. But yes, we don't know what happened behind the scenes. And plus, the language barrier is such a big part of it, I think. If I were Gulab, I would've been trying to learn English as fast and as well as I could. But that's me coming strictly from an American perspective, so it feels like I'm maybe judging him. I dunno. It's all just sad that such an amazing story is tainted by so many questions. My hope would be that Marcus and Gulab could just sit down together, without all the lawyers and translators and authors, and work it out. |

There were questions about Marcus's story after Lone Survivor, the book, was released. There was a disagreement about whether or not a vote was taken to release the prisoners or not. The parents stood fast that there never would have been a vote, that's not how they operated. Honestly, Marcus went through an incredibly traumatic experience, not only did he witness three of his brothers killed he spent days incredibly injured and in and out of consciousness attempting to live. Nobody would fault him for not having all the details correct, or even dreaming or hallucinating parts of the story. Also, the issue being if something went down that wasn't completely above board don't you think he'd want to protect his fellow SEALs and their reputation. I really couldn't fault him for that. But, whenever there is money involved and a reputation to keep (he is making a lot of money as a public speaker now) I could see him wanting to cut ties with Gulab after things became sticky. Right or not. |

I rewatched Lone last night... or at least the first 30 minutes or so. I requested the book from the library, it's out right now. I have a lot on the request list and they are all Taylor related lol As usual, they will all come in at the same time. If they don't have them at my branch then they ship them over. I spend a lot of time at the library tutoring, so I figured I may have well use it instead of wasting money on books. I started reading the article about Gulab, but it's so long. My ADD won't let me focus. I will finish it later.
A few notes on Lone that I didn't comment on the other night bc I was too busy on the phone with Comcast and/or I was reading your comments. -Taylor really does waking up so good. How does he make his face look sleepy like that? In his wake up scene, when he sits up.. He gives a little side eye. Anyone have a still of that???? -The way he opens the laptop, the way his hand is, reminds me of the way he holds the ice cream when he's talking to Smash about Lyla at the Alamo Freeze in season 3 of FNL. Why do I know that??? What i strange thing for me to notice. I need to do a side by side. -Taylor running. He just looks like such an athlete. Emile - not so much. They are both so fast sprinting in at the end. I wonder if he is that fast in real life. The cinematography there was really cool. I love him with 20 pound of muscle on him. My niece has been told she needs to put on 15 pounds of muscle by the time she starts her freshman year. Good luck with that. -The choppers flying through the terrain is just breathtaking and so frightening. -I thought it was cheesy how Taylor steps out from behind the tree to put his foot down when they are trying to decide what to do with the goat herders. -The improv scene between Marc and Taylor is so hysterical. How did they just come up with this stuff and how do they not laugh? Were people laughing in the theater? I can't remember. __________________

Taylor does waking up really well, we've seen him do it a lot as Riggins, Woodrugh, Dr. Lewis, etc. Emile has a strange stance when running, but Pete told Emile know countless times when he found out he was interested in the project. He thought he was too small and I think he even talked about it in an interview with Emile that he was "skinny fat" and not built like a SEAL. But when you contrast Emile with Taylor it is pretty clear who the natural athlete is. I thought there were a few "cheesy" moments, that were done for dramatic effect but I don't really feel like the movie needed it, it was dramatic enough on its own. But yeah, Murphy being silent through the entire debate and then just putting his foot down and being all "this is not a vote". That and the slow motion falling down the mountain, it kind of took you out of the moment. I don't know if they had a loose idea of what they needed to be talking about at that time or if the Coldplay reference was just completely made up. But at the end when Taylor for the final times says "she's a bridesmaid, yes" his voice is so deep and you can tell he's trying not to laugh. I do remember there being laughter in the theater...there, at the table when the four of them are eating and discussing Emile's wife and her decorating and when Patton had to do his dance. |

I started reading Lone Survivor on the beach today and I'm already 1/3 of the way through. I love the personal stuff about his upbringing and his family. I was worried that I would only picture Taylor when he talks about Mike, but I don't, I actually see both the real Mike Murphy and Taylor. Oddly though, I don't see Marc Wahlberg at all, only Marcus Luttrell. I didn't know he was a twin, and I didn't know that his family were horse breeders (makes sense now that Mike was asking him questions about horses).
My friend's husband is a Navy Diver. But he's really big, like 6'5" so we all suspected that he was really SEAL and just couldn't tell us. He is very vague about his job. He also was overseas at the time this whole story takes place. Hmmmm lol Are they allowed to announce that they are Navy SEALS? I guess they are or is it only after they are retired? Marcus talks about going to college but I guess that he never finished since he was a petty officer. It is my understanding that if you have a degree you are atomically moved up in rank. Anyone know for sure? I kind of gloss over on all the parts specific to the timeline of the war. He goes into a lot of detail and I'm trying to process it all. I sensed that he is a George W Bush fan. I barely made it through the prologue where he writes about going to see Michael Murphy's mom. I thought I wasn't going to be able to read it but I am flying through it. I also can't believe how small all the actors are who portrayed these men who were all well over 6 feet tall. I believe he said Danny was 6'9"!! I don't like the SEAL bootcamp stuff. I keep picturing the opening credits of LONE and also American Sniper. I can't believe that they do that voluntarily! God Bless. __________________
