I was driving a winding country road today...tight curves hugging a very intense drop-off, no shoulder. Of course, because it was in the country, there was no guard rail. One mistake and off the 30-50ft drop I would plummet (NO, I wasn’t filming myself and driving). I thought to myself “Holy ****. There’s no guard rail, I better slow down.” As I reduced my speed, I realized that, actually, that was probably the speed i OUGHT to have been driving...a more appropriate, responsible, safe speed for that road. BUT, because I’m so used to being coddled by guard rails and cement barriers on dangerous roads, I wasn’t used to taking responsibility for my own safety. So, I drove more irresponsibly. .
What an illustration of what is happening in our society right now! As we put up more and more “guardrails” in people’s lives: rules and “protections” to keep them “safe”, our society digresses away from taking personal responsibility for their own wellbeing and we’re all “driving like blind idiots” expecting the systems in place to fix it. .
Enough “guardrails” already. Let’s all open our eyes, pull up our grown-up pants and start making better choices.
