Up until very recently, people were allowed to laugh at each other - teasing, razing, takin’ the piss and down right crucifying those we love (and those we don’t) verbally, was a healthy, fun way to release tension. Today, we’re no longer “allowed” to do that and the tension is building. It’s building to terrifying, dangerous proportions.

Laughter is a medicine, and when it comes to our differences and “flaws” it can be the breaker trip that regularly prevents the whole circuit from exploding. If we are no longer allowed to laugh at each other (I say “laugh anyway”) then maybe the antidote to this disaster of a cultural turn is to remember to readily laugh at OURSELVES.

I am a parent of two little kids. I don’t believe in “too precious to tease”; my little angels are precious to me...and they can be total ****heads. So can I. I want to be sure that I know my ****, and laugh at it, so that they learn to get aware of their **** and laugh at that, too. We all laugh at it together...cause, once we’re laughing, it takes all the POWER out of that **** and gives us a clear, healthy place from which to ADDRESS it. When we are avoiding it, ignoring it, brushing it under the carpet, or PCing it away we aren’t able to take a real good look at it and DEAL WITH IT. No real progress is made.

@thesquickerwonkers is about this ****. I write this children’s books series for so many reasons, but right now the one that is really hitting home for me is REMINDING KIDS AND ADULTS to laugh at ourselves, our mistakes, our vices, our sloppy words, our messy differences, our ugliness. Being perfect isn’t the goal. Being IN THE MESS is the goal. And being in the mess together is even better. .
I’m not saying messy is the goal, I’m saying messy WILL HAPPEN, so we as a society gotta get WITH it and teach our young about it so that when they’re in it, they’re not AFRAID of it but can face it head on and ride that wave while holding onto their laughter #ridethewave #****happens #laughterismedicine #thesquickerwonkers
