No question it was unethical, and possibly even illegal. But I suspect the Walter pre-St. Clare was a lot more like Walternate - unscrupulous. As a scientist, he had the ability to justify his actions on the strength of his belief that what he was doing would somehow benefit humanity in a "Greater Good" way.

I look at it this way, if Olivia was able to forgive him, so can we.

Certainly a good point. I certainly don't hold it against him, but mostly because I believe the current Walter is a much different man who had paid dearly for things his younger self did.

And you could say the opposite of Walternate, who was nicer to young Olivia than Walter was. Then Walter stole Peter and Walternate turned on Olivia and everyone else 'over here' until the S4 rewrite, when he started liking her again.
