Fanfic is great for the less mainstream ships. Even if you don't ship a particular pairing, sometimes it can be interesting to read one of those fics - sort of a 'Walk on the Wild Side'. It can make you see a character in a different light.

You do run a certain risk reading fanfic. Characters can be killed off, there can be pairings that for whatever reason you just can't deal with or in some cases the writing is just so bad. It helps to find a few authors in a genre that you get to know and like. And read summaries, notes and warnings. Good fic writers will give you enough information so you can steer clear of things like that if they bother you.
