I hated everyone who wasn't gen1 at first:lol: Now I think I've come to terms with other gens.

minkyfan 05-20-2014 12:45 PM

I think that was a popular opinion

Dacrown 05-20-2014 12:55 PM

I noticed quite the opposite...Everyone's obsessed with gen2:shrug: I felt like a minority.

minkyfan 05-21-2014 04:22 AM

True, I think it's because gen 2 came in riding Skins' popularity after gen 1, plus you have Effy breaking out of her shell, Freffy/Ceffy, and Naomily, which were all incredibly popular

Dacrown 05-21-2014 05:29 AM

Well, if peeps wouldn't like it, I think gen1's popularity wouldn't have saved the show and ratings would have fallen..like with gen3. I agree with the rest:nod: But I personally wasn't interested in those ships and I only liked Effy in gen1. Funny though, how I couldn't wait to watch gen2 with Effy as a lead, but when I actually watched, it left me incredibly disappointed, cause the character had become unrecognizable.

Skins should have ended after series 2

Dacrown,

You're right. Gen 1 shouldn't have been continued. It had a well-through-out story-arc that was consistently and often artfully developed in every episode: Gen 1 was, above all, the story of Tony Stonem's redemption. No other generation of Skins had that kind of dramatic unity. Gen 2 knew where it was going, but not how it would get there. Gen 3 didn't even know where it was going - and it changed course abruptly between series 5 and 6.

Gen 1 was taken to its conclusion: the death of the part of Tony that has to die for him to grow up (Chris). Yes, the ending is ambiguous, but that's deliberate and necessary, because the Stonem siblings (the me-nots, as Effy's words about being born backward clue us) are us, the viewers. It's about redeeming us -- and since our will is free, ambiguity in the ending is necessary. The other teen drama most like Skins Gen 1, Young Americans, has an equally ambiguous ending for the same reason: because it's trying to redeem us, the viewers.

Show business is a business. But from an artistic point of view, Skins should have ended after two seasons. That's when the coherent story ended. Everything after it isn't the same thing at all -- except that the penultimate episode of series 4 is devoted to telling us how to interpret the key symbol of Gen 1, namely, Tony's being hit by a bus.

Most Young Americans fans wish that show had continued. But it died at the right time. Pity that Skins didn't.

Think this sums up the big problems with later series', though I refuse to believe Freddie dying by baseball bat of all things was a planned decision  Gen 3 became a ratings grab, which ended up driving away even more people.

and s7 just was not needed.

I had a cool Gen1 dream today, gonna type it out while I remember. So I was on the excursion on the set, it didn't look like set at all, but just houses that were supposedly character's houses. I didn't really want to see how it looks like in real life, because I was afraid it would be different and nit as lovely as on the screen...Gen2 was with me! But for some reason everyone ignored me and I got do pissed that I separated myself from the main group and went to Chris' house, which looked totally different. Then I decided I want to leave and come back when no one will be around, but before that I would hang out with April or Larissa, I thought I would just call and tell them that we were on Skins together, but then I realized we weren't:lol: So here I was on the set of Skins so sad and lonely:D

There was a set? ... Where was production HQ, anyhow?

There was a set used to shoot SKINS gen 1? Really? Or just in your dream?

I spent three days in Bristol in September 2012, much of it doing SKINS shooting-site tourism. I had the impression that all of SKINS was shot a various real locations, without the use of sets.

I supposed there must have been some kind of SKINS production headquarters in Bristol during shooting. But I don't know where it was located. Does anyone?

And were sets constructed inside of it?

Dacrown 06-15-2014 03:32 AM

Just in my dream. I haven't heard anything about Skins sets and I do share you opinion on them not having sets at all. I think, the houses were the only set they had.
Here is what I've found...

Clicks on the pictures to get a description.

It would be a delight to visit all those places. They look lovely.

Oh, I just remembered that Skins were filmed in a real school! Oh, Chris and Jal kiss scene was filmed in Queen Square.

wow, that is an AWESOME flickr album. i just clicked it and i might take time going through each one. maybe someday i could go to do it myself!

most built sets are of the rooms, i guess? they seem very specific. also i'm sure that Freddie's shed was built for filming purposes.
