Freddie ♥ Cook #14: I see signs, now all the time, that you're not dead, you're sleeping.
Freddie McLair is the shy skater boi from Roundview College. He enjoys spending his days smoking spliff, digging through trash bins for his latest fashion ensemble, and chastising his best friend James Cook. James Cook is the self destructive alcoholic-in-training. He spends his d a y s smoking Freddie's spliff, wearing Freddie's clothes, and attempting crazy antics that keep Freddie's attention. When we first meet these two, they're also introduced to Effy Stonem, the Skins resident homewrecker. She t a k e s one look at these two innocent boys and sinks her claws in, pining them against each other.
Cook is the first one to get into her knickers, and when he does, Freddie is instantly offended to learn that Cook has been having sex with someone behind his back. Cook reminds Freddie that they aren't together anymore and apart from the times when his **** is actually up his ass, he has no reason to worry about where it is the rest of the time. He continues to test the limits of Freddie's friendship until it comes to a head at Fred's house. When Freddie headbutts Cook, he bounces back with a passionate kiss, confessing his dark secret: he's in love with Freddie. Unable to stare into Freddie's eyes any longer knowing the truth, he leaves and drowns his sorrows in the only thing Freddie wants: Effy. Long story, short: Freddie goes camping with Effy, they finally consumate their love, Effy goes nowhere with Cook, and Freddie takes Effy back home before she escapes to Italy, leaving the two a l o n e for the summer.
Series four of Skins picks up with Freddie and Cook partying in Bristol. Free of Effy and b u r y i n g hidden desires, they manage to maintain a somewhat fragile friendship - that is until Effy comes back and claims Freddie again. When Cook sees them together, he goes into a jealous rage, beats up Shanky (RIP), and is sent to prison. While under house arrest, Freddie visits him to make sure he's alright. Unable to resist any longer, Cook confesses that he let Effy take the one boy he's ever loved and that's the reason he's been so on edge lately. Freddie, at a loss for words, heads for the door; before leaving he turns to Cook and says that he loves him too. Once left in silence, he opens his phone and views pictures that he took that one time Freddie had had too much to drink.
Effy attempts suicide to garner more attention from Freddie and Cook, but her plan backfires and she is sent far away to a mental institution for two months. Cook is there for Freddie during this time. They drink, smoke spliff, and it's like old times again. They begin to grow closer until Effy comes back and ****s everything up again. When Cook can see that Effy is slowly draining Freddie of his life, he corners outside a pub and tells her he's still in love with him. She tells him to piss off. The next day he sees her crossing a street and saves her life, only to be put back in the hospital under the watchful eye of Dr. Foster. Freddie tells her she's gonna be okay and to suck it up before leaving for an afternoon nap. When he gets a phone call to meet Foster, he heads over there only to tell him to stay away from Effy. Foster tells Freddie he thinks he's got everyone fooled, but he knows what's really going on: Pascal's Triangulation of Desire. Bewildered, Freddie heads for the door and is shocked to see Foster heading towards him with a baseball bat. Suddenly, Cook bursts through the door and pushes the old man down the stairs. Cook turns to Freddie, runs his fingers through his hair, and kisses him with a fervor. They both embrace and promise that another girl will never come between them again.
