He was bitter and cruel on many occasions but its still the most heart breaking thing

I agree I do feel like he was doing it for Lily though not for Harry.

Oh yeah completely but it wasn't like he would even have her gratitude since she was gone. It was just so important that keeping Harry alive would have made Lily happy, so he did it. Its interesting to wonder whether by the time of the second war Snape actually had realised that Voldemort was wrong in his world views, or whether bringing him down was still entirely because of Lily.
