From executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Smash," "Hairspray," "Chicago") comes an instant holiday classic: "The Sound of Music," based on the original Broadway musical. Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer star as Maria and Captain von Trapp in this beloved story of the young novice who falls in love with Captain von Trapp and his seven children, set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Austria. The jewel in the Rodgers and Hammerstein crown, "The Sound of Music" contains some of the most famous songs ever written for the stage, including "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Climb Every Mountain" and "Edelweiss."

This new version of "The Sound of Music" will be a faithful adaptation of the original stage musical, to retell the story for a whole new generation. And more than that, it will be broadcast LIVE, adding a whole new level of immediacy and excitement. Get ready to reintroduce your family to the most joyful, most emotional and most musical family adventure of them all. Three-hour live event.

"My entire fall has basically been all about "The Sound of Music. That's a wonderful project that I've been asked to be a part of," Underwood shares in a video interview with the magazine. "It's a live musical on TV so there's been a lot of prep work."

She continues, "I've been in New York quite a bit doing run-through's and working on a kind of music that's not exactly the kind of music that I'm use to singing. So it's been a lot of work and it's been really challenging. But I think in the end it's really going to be very rewarding. It's going to be exciting to actually do a musical live on TV."

As far as performing live in the iconic role of 'Maria', Underwood reveals, "The live thing? It's gutsy. It's ambitious." Yet the only part that has her a little nervous is the acting. "Music is where I live. But doing other things broadens me and my experiences and what I can do. I'm up for anything."

The Sound of Music" will be presented as a live three-hour broadcast and will air on December 5 on NBC. Five-time Grammy winner Carrie Underwood will star in the coveted role of Maria Von Trapp. Acclaimed British actor Stephen Moyer, best known to U.S. audiences for his role as Bill Compton in HBO's "True Blood, will portray decorated World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp.

From Universal Television, "The Sound of Music" is executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Beth

It may be the second-greatest thing to ever come out of Bethpage, L.I.

The vast complex where scientists built the Apollo lunar lander will double for the Austrian Alps when NBC televises its live version of “The Sound of Music” on Dec. 5.

The production, starring country crooner Carrie Underwood, will be the first live network TV telecast of an entire Broadway show since 1957’s “Cinderella.”

Producers have opted to have the show originate in the cavernous complex that once housed top-secret projects for aerospace giant Grumman, rather than broadcast from a New York City soundstage or theater.

“There is no live audience and no proscenium,” as in a conventional theater,” an NBC official said.

“Instead, the show will look like a film with all the action played live and in sequence.”

For example, a scene might be performed in the von Trapp family’s living room, shot with multiple cameras. As the action proceeds, the actors will move to the next set off-camera and walk into the next scene, which will be filmed by a second camera crew, the official said.

“Major set or costume changes will be made during commercial breaks, but several changes will happen instantaneously during the filming. If something goes wrong in the live filming, that’s the way it will be broadcast,” NBC officials said.

“All of the singing will be live, and the music — using a 40-piece orchestra — will be prerecorded in order to ensure the best mix of the instruments.”

The show will feature a a cast of 61, including four understudies and the six von Trapp childre

Oh I didn't know the singing will be live. I thought it would be pre-recorded since I saw a picture of Carrie in the studio with one other actor

Mo Nighean Donn 11-01-2013 02:57 PM

 No, thank god they aren't doing it that way, I hate it when things are prerecorded for live things, just can get awkward to watch

They have started airing the commercial on TV over here already, exciting :yay:

Thanks for this thread! Carmen was telling me about the upcoming special. :)

Christian Borle! He was Tom in Smash. I'm sure he'll have the part of Von Trapp's friend who called himself the family's "agent" for the music festival and helped them escape. He's very good and would be perfect for that part.

I'm having a problem getting my head around Carrie singing Julie Andrews songs. I'm sure she'll be as wonderful, though, in a slightly different way. :wiggle:

Mo Nighean Donn 11-02-2013 02:20 PM

Glad you made your way over here Sherry!

I love Christian too, he is such a talent. They did a great job casting the roles. :)

 It will for sure be different  They have said several times that they aren't trying to recreate the original movie though, I mean there is only one Julie Andrew's

I still can't believe that this performance will be Live, it is rare for these kind of shows to be live.

Time is ticking closer and closer to NBC's live broadcast of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music, and Grammy-winning country music star Carrie Underwood is proving that she can hold her own in a musical as well. Underwood makes her debut as Maria von Trapp on the small screen on December 5, and the telecast's award-winning producers, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, are confident that fans and viewers will be pleasantly surprised by the blond bombshell.

According to an article in the New York Post, Zadan and Meron confirmed that Underwood's signature country "twang" won't be creeping into the Austria-set musical. “She’s one of those people who showed up the first day and knew every line of the script and every note of every song,” Zadan said. “She’s an unbelievably hard worker.” Although Underwood admitted that she “had the furthest to go” of anybody in the cast, the show's tune “The Lonely Goatherd” will make use of a certain vocal technique Underwood is confident about: “I’ve been yodeling my whole life, growing up listening to Kitty Wells and The Carter Family.” The live event will also star Stephen Moyer, Audra McDonald, Christian Borle, Laura Benanti and seven young actors.

Underwood's Christian fan base was a big reason Zadan and Meron were excited to cast the American Idol winner as the iconic Maria. “I think it’s very important, especially in a piece like this, a musical that deals with religion and nuns, that she has that fan base,” Zadan told the Post. “There’s an element in faith-based belief in the show. The spirituality in the show lends itself to Carrie’s core audience.” Underwood admits that she was happy to take on a character who almost became a nun. “Her faith was very important to her and it’s important to me,” she said. Underwood said McDonald and the other nuns are keeping spirits high: “When they sang, I thought, ‘This is what heaven’s going to sound like.’”
