Road to Publication #01: Agent or Publisher? Traditional or Indie?

Road to Publication.

Discuss options that have come up to get a book published. Which road would you take? There have been options, and it can be a long road.

Would you inquire directly to a publisher, or would you find an agent? Would you try traditional publishing, or go your own route? (self publishing -- indie publishing.)

Do you have any tips for others?

I think the quality isn't there as often with published works as it had been, but I do think that all writers should still try to get published. Doing the submissions and trying to make it, I think would really push you to be better and stronger. Then when you reach a certain point, maybe look at going independent.

I feel like what publishers can provide, the teams of professionals, can't be easily replaced. However I think that most of them need to raise up and be better because they've slacked for too long. Especially in terms of editing and design work.

I support independent publishing more-so in theory and don't think it's quite there yet, and as long as it isn't vanity publishing.

Yeah. I think vanity publishing is the worst. I think as long as you have a good editor, the quality can be good. I have read a few indie books and I have been happy with no complaints.

A strong team of editors is a must for sure.

I agree. Whether or not a book is edited can either make or break you.

I completely agree. Sometimes, lack of editing or proofreading is the sole downfall of a book. I've read works before where the premise and the idea was fantastic, but the execution fell short. That's where a good team, and a good couple of people to help keep your thoughts on track comes in handy.

One of my relatives has a couple books published and I've tried to read them but I feel that his editing could be much better. I've tried to proofread around 4-5 chapters but it was a long and tedious process.

Yeah. I've read books where the story doesn't flow, or there are grammar errors that does my head in.

That sucks. I recently self-published a book, I like to think it's not that bad. I can't afford an editor so I hope I did it well enough.

I'm on this road right now. I write poetry and just last week, I submitted one to a publishing company to be made into a children's book. I've written poetry since the 4th grade!
