November Book of the Month: Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen

Alrighty, our November book club book is:

The year is 1929. New York is ruled by the Bright Young Things: flappers and socialites seeking thrills and chasing dreams in the anything-goes era of the Roaring Twenties.

Letty Larkspur and Cordelia Grey escaped their small Midwestern town for New York's glittering metropolis. All Letty wants is to see her name in lights, but she quickly discovers Manhattan is filled with pretty girls who will do anything to be a star…

Cordelia is searching for the father she's never known, a man as infamous for his wild parties as he is for his shadowy schemes. Overnight, she enters a world more thrilling and glamorous than she ever could have imagined—and more dangerous. It's a life anyone would kill for . . . and someone will.

The only person Cordelia can trust is Astrid Donal, a flapper who seems to have it all: money, looks, and the love of Cordelia's brother, Charlie. But Astrid's perfect veneer hides a score of family secrets.

Across the vast lawns of Long Island, in the illicit speakeasies of Manhattan, and on the blindingly lit stages of Broadway, the three girls' fortunes will rise and fall—together and apart.
This one sounds good! I'll check at my library tonight and hopefully they still have it in :)

Already read it, but I look forward to the discussion. :)

I seem to have bad luck with the books I nominate before I've read them, but no worries I'm too picky for my own good

I'm curious to see what characters/storylines are preferred

I have this book from the library, so I will start reading it when I get some time.

Finally, the library has it and there's not a ton of holds on it  It's checked out now but I'm the first hold, so I should be able to read it :)

Amy, what do you mean? Did you not like it?

I didn't like a lot of the decisions characters made, which did affect my liking of it. But I definitely think I would've liked it more if I was a teenager and it's hard to get back to that frame of mind

Has anyone started yet?

I think I liked the book more than you, but I too struggled with the characters' decisions. Sometimes you just want to shake them. Especially Cordelia.

I've been wanting to read this since it's been released, but last time I checked, my library didn't have it. :pout:

That's always annoying. Can you make any requests for purchase? My library has this form you can fill online, they don't always approve them and there can be a delay, but at least the option is there.

I have the book in my possession now :yay: But I'm currently in the middle of HP Deathly Hallows, which I really want to finish without interruption (hopefully this weekend), so I will probably be starting this sometime next week or next weekend. I'm excited to get to it!

HP always takes precedence

Hope you enjoy the time period when you get to it though ;)

I'm on chapter 2 its pretty intresting I liked the prologue. Cordelia seems intresting.

FreedomsBullets 11-14-2010 12:06 PM

She is interesting, though I have mixed feelings about her.

So I'm about in the middle of the book and liking it okay so far. I don't mind the action and the development of the plot, but the author sometimes goes on and on in descriptions of people or places or "types" of things that it really dilutes the story a lot.

I'm really surprised at the developments in Cordelia's story right now...it's moving a lot faster than I thought it would.

I really didn't like Cordelia  but I did like when she associated with non-love interests :P
