Favorite opening lines?

Without a doubt before I decide to read a book, I always read the opening line. And if that catches my eye, then I decide to read it. Some of my favs:

"First the colors. Then the humans. That's usually how I see things. Or at least, how I try. Here's a small fact: You are going to die." - The Book Thief

"All happy families are alike. All unhappy families are unique in their unhappiness" - Anna Karenina

"Nothing in this book is true." -Cat's Cradle

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." - Neuromancer

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” pride & Prejudice

"All happy families are alike. All unhappy families are unique in their unhappiness" - Anna Karenina

Cant forget the ever classic Hobbit:

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort" - J.R.R. Tolkien

Adding such a vibrant and visual theme (counting colors) to a dark era of that country and time in history is really what drew me into the book.

What kind of character is Clarence Scrubb to deserve it?

He was described as being pompous/arrogant, really unpleasant, whiny, self-centered a know-it-all, a bully, etc.

I love this book. One of my first "real" books I read. It was required reading the summer before Freshman year. It seemed so scandalous to read about a married couple and ex's, lies, deceptions, and in a classic tale no less - all for a 13 year old mind.

It was great! And to come full circle I was discussing the book with my now, 13 yro Bo Peep and telling her of the 5 books required for summer reading before the first day of High School. "Rebecca" was one of those books.

Thanks for the memories.
