So ... what do you think Jackie and Donna thought of each other when Kelso first brought Jackie (as his girlfriend) to the basement?

Well, I assume that they already had an opinion of each other prior to him bringing her around. I would guess that their opinions didn't differ as much as in the first episode.

I think maybe they couldn't imagine becoming as close as they eventually would.

Donna's first thought when Kelso presented Jackie as his girlfriend must've been something like, "Oh, God. Not her."

And Jackie might've thought, "Michael's friends with a giant redhead? Ugh ... but I can work with it."

I think Jackie saw potential in Donna to become "more than a tomboy" (Jackie's opinion), and she also must have recognized Donna's integrity. Jackie was used to superficial, judgmental, disloyal "friendships" with her fellow cheerleaders. Donna gave Jackie the chance to have a real friendship with a girl -- plus Donna was the only girl in the basement besides her. She needed someone to hang out with when Kelso was goofing of with the boys.

I think they both needed each other even if they wouldn't admit it at first. Jackie needed a true girl friend, one who wouldn't be superficial. Donna needed an actual girlfriend.

I agree. Donna at least tried to ground Jackie when Jackie ignored all of Kelso's ... well, Kelso-ness. And Jackie helped Donna navigate the "waters of love". Donna needed guidance when starting a romantic relationship with Eric, and Jackie was often a really good friend to her in this regard.

These are probably pretty spot on. Even though they've known each other since they were kids, Donna was probably never a blip on Jackie's radar because she was/is so self-absorbed. Whereas, with Donna, Jackie is that girl. We've all known that girl in high school where even though you don't know her on a personal level, you just can't stand her.

I would've liked a moment where Donna recognized how much Jackie had helped her with Eric. I think she returned the favor by trying to keep Jackie from going back to Kelso, but a real acknowledgment to Eric about Jackie's friendship would've been nice. Eric probably would've been shocked to hear he had Jackie to thank, in part, for the health of his relationship with Donna.

I knew some Jackie's in high school too.

I would have liked to see Donna acknowledge Jackie's help with Eric too. Maybe it happened when we didn't see it.

It must have, and that's my head!canon. Donna was too aware of these things not to have gratitude about them. I think they should've become closer in S6 and, instead of a throw-away filler episode like "Young Man's Blues," we could've gotten an episode representing this closeness. Like Donna and Jackie have taken on each other's qualities so much that they scare Eric and Hyde -- and by the end of the episode, they revert back to themselves (mostly) and thank God for it.
