In "Kelso's Serenade," the Formans go visit Kitty's aunt Pearl, and I always think how grateful Hyde should be that he wasn't dragged along on that trip. But it also reinforces that line between Hyde and the Formans. He's not quite family. Unlike Eric, he can be kicked out of the house for doing something Red doesn't approve of.

In fanfic, people often leave out that tension, as if Hyde's actually a Forman. But he must always have that threat in the back of his mind of being disowned, a feeling of not quite belonging.

That's a good point. I think in some senses Hyde was family, but in other senses like that there was a line.

For Red, there was a definite line, as much as cared about Hyde. For Kitty, the line was more fuzzy. Hyde wasn't her baby like Eric was, but she did see him as almost her son. One of my favorite Red-and-Hyde moments, though, is when Red is so protective of Hyde during W.B.'s first episode.

Red [to W.B.: ) You're supposed to look at me and know that I raised fine young men.

In this moment, it's clear Red considers Hyde his son. Took him a while to get completely there, but once Hyde's biological father got into the picture, I think that woke Red up to his feelings.

I loved that scene too. It is one of my favorite Red/Hyde scenes. The other being the talk in the basement on his 18th birthday.

Yes! I'm really glad the show gave us these follow-up moments between Red and Hyde to show their relationship. I also really like the scene where Hyde tells Red he's off to live with Bud. Red's this close to crying, and we can see just how similar he and Hyde are. Neither of them admit to wanting a hug, but they hug each other without hesitation, and it's not an awkward hug either. It's a long, father-son hug. Red's love for Hyde is in it, and Hyde's gratitude to Red is written all over his face.
