In my point of view, Steve and Kelly treated David like a jerk in most of the scenes. If I was David in S1, I would've shamed them for can't wait for them to get out of the school.

Season 1 - Way too pervy / over the top
Season 2 - Just there
Season 3 - Like really had nothing to do
Season 4 - Moody
Season 5 - Happy until he realized he loved Donna again....lame.
Season 6 - Chilled out
Season 7 - Moody
Season 8 - Moody until Valerie and him got together.

Hm. They did, especially Kelly, but she also had good reasons for it. The guy was stalking her. David was pretty lame in S1. He got more depth in S2.

Steve treated him with disrespect too, but not too much. They had friendly moments from the pilot already.

The thing is, no matter how bad they treated him, he wanted to hang out with them, and saw any sign of attention as a progress. He was desperately trying to be popular.

What's funny to me is that writers were sort of hinting at some sort of triangle with these three, at least I think they did. Popular girl is trying to get away from her clumsy jock-y ex and runs into a geek boy who adores her.
