No, it was never mentioned that he worked for free. I'm not sure what was the arrangement but considering that Brandon didn't work in S4 onward (except for maybe a few summer jobs), he must've gotten some money from Jim and Cindy.

I agree. I like the Brandon/Dylan friendship too but Brandon/Steve's friendship seemed to me more consistent.

Brandon/Dylan was good but real friendship would not get in each other's way and hurting one another - Steve and Brandon had that friendship that will last 'til the test of time.They had the real bromance. Yes many people will vote more for Brandon/Dylan and Kelly/Brenda friendship but if people use a little common sense, you can clearly see which are the best 2 friendships on the show: Steve/Brandon and Kelly/Donna

I loved their talk in high school graduation episode when Steve tells Brandon he made sure his donation to orphanage was traceable back so Mrs. T would know he did it. But Brandon tells it was still a nice thing to do and that Steve is also a boyscout at heart.

I rewatched Higher Education and there is a funny and touching scene when Brandon and Steve study together. That is also when Brandon visits his house for the first time and Steve tells him his parents got divorced two times. Also, that there was more children, so I guess when his half-brothers showed up later, it was not so much without the basis. When Brandon says that his parents are still together, Steve says "Don't worry. It is not your fault" and they laugh. Steve was such a jock in these epis, but still charming.
