I find it kind of fascinating that Valerie puts herself in a situation that reminds her of her father at the beginning of S5. It's easy to forget, but when she finally complains to Brandon about Dylan at the end of the Halloween episode, she mentions that her dad was also an alcoholic who'd be drugged up all day and hang around the house cleaning his gun. ... The gun he eventually shot himself with.

Yeah, I guess it's common for scarred people like her to be drawn to situations they still need to deal with. You can say there was a need of redemption on her side, something that made her feel that by saving Dylan, she was saving herself too. Really, lots of dad issues on both sides...

That's exactly what I mean. I'm really impressed with the show for considering that line of thought too. I know on some level it could only be seen as her going after the "rest" of what Brenda had (family, Dylan; which is interesting in itself), or just them being outsiders, or them merely being "hot"/"bad" together, but then Valerie kind of turns a corner after she sees how much support he has from people that care about him and he's not accepting it. Suddenly, she thinks that's a shame, and she wants to stay with the "avocado heads", and we see her scared of seeing Dylan's use of a gun. "My father shot himself that way."

Yup, and it's a testimony of how much thought the writers put into their characters. They planned Valerie as this complicated girl who should keep things spicy, but they didn't throw all things at once, they developed her in a way that the audience could eventually figure out where she's coming from.

Then they bust out her kid pics in S8, after her trial with Noah. Steve says it reminded him of the decency within her, and Brandon gets sentimental about elementary school in Minnesota with her. I guess Val was quite loved by S8. David, Steve, Brandon ... and her and Donna had higher highs and lower lows, lol.
