PLOT
What's Eating Gibert Grape is a beautifully shot movie of tenderness, caring and self-awareness that is set amongst the fictional working class one street town Endora. Centred around the Grape family Ellen and Amy and their two brothers Arnie and Gilbert, who, along with their morbidly obese widowed mother Bonnie Grape are striving to survive and coexist with the absence of a father figure, low wage work and seventeen-year-old Arnie's severe mental condition. It is in this awkward and extremely one sided affair that the unfortunate Gilbert has to constantly, while working for the town's slowly dying Convenience Store, take care of his younger brother Arnie. Gilbert's life, his future, is thwarted he know this, but it is in this Guardian Angel that his love and bond for Arnie cannot, and will not, be let go. That is until the free spirit of Becky arrives in town, and with her grandmother are stranded for the week while waiting for parts for their vehicle. This realization unties new feelings, new thoughts and new hope for the put upon Gibert.

Future Titles
- "I know a boy whose name is Arnie... he's, uh, 'bout to turn 18 and have a big party".
- Because you don't hurt Arnie, you just don't.
- "Match in the gas tank, *boom* *boom*!"
- Because Arnie could go at any time.
- Because if you don't know what to say, say "Thank You". Thank you.
- Arnie isn't becoming big, is Gilbert who's getting littler, he's shrinking.

Thanks for starting the new thread Nicky :)

We're finally on thread 2!

Should we add future titles to the OP?

You can rearrange the opening however you'd like.

Thanks to you Rach :back_hug:
Yes, we can add future titles!!

These, right?
  • "I know a boy whose name is Arnie... he's, uh, 'bout to turn 18 and have a big party".
  • Because you don't hurt Arnie, you just don't.
  • "Match in the gas tank, *boom* *boom*!"

I like the other ones too:
  • Because Arnie could go at any time.
  • Because if you don't know what to say, say "Thank You". Thank you.
  • Arnie isn't becoming big, is Gilbert who's getting littler, he's shrinking.
I just wasn't feeling them this time.

nicky83 01-23-2012 10:31 AM

Love it!

So did you read it right after you saw it for the first time or more recently?

nicky83 01-23-2012 10:53 AM

No no, I buy it 2 years ago... Before it was impossible, when I saw the film I was young and I didn't speak English :(

‘ChelsღChina 01-23-2012 10:58 AM

Did the DVD have Italian subtitles for you?

nicky83 01-23-2012 11:08 AM

I have the Italian DVD
In Italy we don't have only the DVD of Total Eclipse. There is only on VHS. And of course, Don's Plum.

‘ChelsღChina 01-23-2012 11:20 AM

I don't think there is a DVD for Don's Plum in the US either. Not that I care :P

But some of the best movies are like this: They show everyday life, carefully observed, and as we grow to know the people in the film, maybe we find out something about ourselves. The fact that Hallstrom is able to combine these qualities with comedy, romance and even melodrama make the movie very rare.

That's an amazing quote!!
