BSG 3x19 - "Crossroads part I" Episode Discussion

Part I of the two part BSG season 3 finale:

Titled "Crossroads" here is the brief Sci-fi channel official summary: Baltar's trial begins, but his testimony might make the fleet tear itself apart.

So, let the "circus begin"

Looking forward to this episode, Baltar's trial is finally starting and I think there'll be some interesting things to learn/discover during the whole thing.

I can't wait to see what "dirt" they'll dig up on Baltar

Will Crashdown's murder be included?

I know you want it to, Alex. But who else knows about it, Callie? Does Tyrol know about it as well?

Callie, Tyrol and Celix...whatever her name was...she was one of the deck hands. Those were the people who survivied, plus Baltar. I mean come on...of course I do want it come up. Crashdown was a great character, originally inserted to "replace Helo" in a way, while Helo was on Caprica doing his thing.

What's with Roslin's dream?

Anders is a nugget! Awesome. It's good to see more of him, and Ceelix. I really like her. And Tigh with the radio, was intersting. The way it seemed that only he and Anders were hearing something.

The prosecutor is annoying as hell. And Lampkin is a genius, the way he started his argument.

I knew something would happen to Racetrack. And the way that she was too arrogant about how they haven't seen any cylons.

Tigh is hilarious, the way he walked into Six's cell. Six's manipulation of Tigh is quite interesting. Man, even though I know the whole slapping thing was coming, because of the previews, it was still a shock. It's also good to see more of Six, she really needs some more airtime.

I don't think Tigh is completely drunk, he seems too preoccupied by what Six said. And there's that music again! The end of it seemed a bit odd, a little mechanical almost.

Anders is still hearing that music. But is Tory also?

What Lee knows has to do with what Roslin was drinking, I just know it. Why else would he get that look on his face after smelling it?

Tigh is breaking my heart. I always knew he cared for Ellen even if he didn't show it, but still. This is just so sad.

Dude! This trial is tearing too many people apart! I know Bill and Lee didn't always have the bet relationship, but now it's even worse. I don't know if I agree with what Lee is doing, giving up his position, but if he thinks it's best, it probably is. But he does look good in a suit.

So, Roslin has cancer again. I don't know if I really have anything to say about this.

Dee is leaving! I didn't see that coming. Is it just because of the trial?

Did Gaeta called Helo "ensign"? I thought he was a Lieutenant?

Now I know the mechanical sound to the song! Remember how the raiders try to disable ships with the red eye? It always made a sound. That's the sound.

I don't think it's the kind you're going to like

OK...here's my disclaimer. I didn't see the first 10 minutes or so of the episode, but since I'm at work from midnight till 8am right now, I caught almost all of it on the repeat on the sci-fi channel from 12pm-1am.

I caught the episode from when the prosecutor woman was making her opening argument...and I tend to agree with her pretty much on all points. I am curious, if this "trial" is only focused on the events that happened on New Caprica, b/c other people brought up the whole smuggling of the nuke to Gina on Cloud 9...which resulted in the death of thousands of people...all because Baltar wanted to "prove his love, something, whatever" to Gina. So Baltar is very guilty of that...I mean come on, what else did he think Gina was going to do with a nuke...a woman who's only wish was to "die"? So I don't want to hear about excuses for Baltar on this point...the cylons found them resulting in the direct detonation/radiation signature of that nuke! Again, I'm wondering if this will ever be brought up, since BSG is the kind of show that typically honors continuity.

Tigh was almost sympathetic in this episode. I felt that Eddie and Michael Hogan had a great scene, when Bill Adama was putting drunk Saul to bed, esp. when he told him he was his oldest friend and never embarrassed him which of course is not true, what else is he supposed to say? and the handshake. Nice moment. Tigh does have one redeeming quality. He's a hell of a military leader when he's sober and in a crisis.

The radio noise he was hearing...it was heard by Tori, Sam Anders and Tigh. Could these three be potential cylon models? Maybe? Oh and Mike...before you celebrate...remember that there are 5 left, so let's say that they reveal 3 models...and that's it...that leaves 2 more slots open...so technically, Starbuck could still be one of those last 2 cylons! That's right, I've thought it through

Are we going to get more on the judging panel? Maybe I missed it. Five captains...but the woman "head judge", anything on her?

Lampking...it's the voice. That's the most irritating thing about him. I would rather him say something like...."Hello, I'm C3PO, human cyborg relations...and this is my counterpart....R2D2...er, I mean Major Adama, er Mr. Adama, er...I quit and my wife left me and I'm soon to be a part of a country music song guy"

Tigh's testimony was vintage drunk Saul. At least they stayed consistant with the character.

Laura's testimony was better, I feel that the case has been made, but I'm sure it'll be solidified by Gaeta's testimony in part II. The fact that the cancer has returned is a big shock to me, Ron Moore did say that it "may return" at one point last year in a commentary, but still. What a great curve, and I don't think it made a big impression as far as discrediting Laura. If anything, I feel that Lee was going to go after the "stolen election" material, but I guess he doesn't know.

Lost in the shuffle, was the really neat special effects shot of the cylon fleet ontop of the patrol raptor of Racetrack, with the missle chasing after it, and barely escaping death.

Tigh interrogating Caprica Six, I wouldn't have done that if I was Bill Adama, but it made for an interesting scene. I like the fact that she sees "phantom Baltar" in her mind/conscience...it adds so much to character, and I definitely didn't think she was going to hit Saul back. We saw a side of Six that we haven't seen in a while...the mean, manipulative Six that will do anything to survive. I hope we see more of it.

The Bill Adama/Lee Adama scene was priceless. First, Eddie was brilliant in it...I mean he often is! I loved the dialogue, very well written. Esp. when Lee said something like "I won't serve under someone who questions my intergrity"...which right after, I was like...damn that was cold, to say that to his father...but I almost fell out of my chair...as Eddie said "I won't have someone serving under me that doesn't have any" Thank you Admiral, you made my day! What a great line. This is why I love BSG so much! I would have liked Bill saying something like "Don't let the door hit you on the a** on the way off Galactica"

The scene where basically Lee showed why he's quickly becoming my least favorite character...he's a naive idealist, just like Dee said, and I'm so glad she's dumping his backside and moving on hopefully, not just b/c of the trial but b/c she's finally seeing through him, and that is that Lee will never truly passionately love her the way he did Kara. Oh and why is she the one to move, he's the one without a rank now and officially out of the military. She should have kept the quarters.

The Press did seem like vultures, and I'm glad that Tori said what she said, although as Rosilyn said, her choice of words may have been questionable. It does give Mary McDonald a very interesting storyline...will she consider another blood transfusion, maybe this time from Caprica Six or Sharon?

Helo is the new "interum" x/o just like before, when he was flying patrol above New Caprica. I like it. I liked him having the tactical situation discussion with Gaeta, a necessary scene to move the plot forward. So Bill Adama took Lee's suggestion. That says something. As to Helo's speech to finish out the episode, it did wonderfully build the suspence. "The calm before the storm".

Tigh's music is "in the ship"...OK and "to be continued". Whatever that means

I definitely will tell you that was Michael Trucco's voice in the promo for the S3 finale part II. So I guess Sam Anders...welcome to the cylon club!

Overall, a 5 out of 5! Brilliantly written and acted episode! Can't wait till next week

Alex

Alex, I pretty much agree with most of what you said. As for Baltar's trial, I think they are only doing what happened on New Caprica. But, if something is brought up, I'm sure they'll use it.

And, HA! I've said for weeks I thought Anders was a cylon!

What? I suggested that Sam Anders is a cylon, b/c without Kara he's pretty much useless unless they make him one of the final five

Oh, to make things fun, I'll make a list of the crimes that Baltar really "should be on trial" for

Mini-Series:

Baltar used by Caprica Six to help the cylon attack, doesn't tell the truth on Galactica, which I think, if he was honest, would have been the start of a different life for him.

Season 1:

The Cylon Detector: Did it really work? What he did/didn't do to Boomer when her "results came in".

Season 2:

Shooting a colonial officer and killling him on KOBOL
Helping Gina escape, and killing a colonial space marine yes I know, Gina killed him but he was there and that's second degree murder
Helping smuggle Gina to Could 9 and giving her the nuke therefore responsible for the death of thousands on the ship.

So I feel those can be added to Baltar's trial, just to spice things up.

Alex
