Kim Basinger is negotiating to join Zac Efron in "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," the Burr Steers-directed drama for Universal Pictures.

Basinger would play the grieving mother of Efron's character, a caretaker at a cemetery who has weekly meetings with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault. Efron stepped out of "Footloose" in March to re-unite with his "17 Again" director Steers on the project.

Pic was originally scripted by Craig Pearce and polished by Steers. Marc Platt is producing.

Basinger most recently starred with Charlize Theron in "The Burning Plain," the Guillermo Arriaga-directed drama that will be released Sept. 18.

That would be sooo awesome! And she brings credibility as an Oscar Winner

Im trying to think of movies I really liked her in

But I remember she won the Oscar for L.A. Confidential but I never saw it

I think it would be good to have her on board though.

I've just been very eh about her. I don't think her acting is that great. I mean LA Confidential was good. But her roles since then for me have just been eh.

From what I remember shes actually more inferred/talked about/mentioned in the book. I dont think she had "real" dialogue in the book from what I remember but don't quote me on that

Yea same for me, you're only as good as your last picture && she hasn't been great in much else really. I liked her in L.A. Confidential, but that was over a decade ago && really she hasn't made waves due to her performances in much else, I think she did some TV movie in 2006, can't remember much else other than her drama with Alec Baldwin.

But eh, whatever, if the casting directors && producers felt she fit the role then great! I'm thinking if they casted her that they made the mom's role bigger
