"The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud" Synopsis – IMDb

Charlie St. Cloud is a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried. Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlie's life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves.

Kim Basinger is negotiating to join Zac Efron in "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," the Burr Steers-directed drama for Universal Pictures.

Basinger would play the grieving mother of Efron's character, a caretaker at a cemetery who has weekly meetings with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault. Efron stepped out of "Footloose" in March to re-unite with his "17 Again" director Steers on the project.

Pic was originally scripted by Craig Pearce and polished by Steers. Marc Platt is producing.

Basinger most recently starred with Charlize Theron in "The Burning Plain," the Guillermo Arriaga-directed drama that will be released Sept. 18.

Kim Basinger is in talks to join Zac Efron in "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud." And, according to Variety, if negotiations work out Basinger will be playing Efron's mother.

The film is being helmed by Efron's "17 Again" director, Burr Steers, whose credits also include "Igby Goes Down." In order to make the film, Efron passed on the "Footloose" remake — his role went to "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford. Efron has expressed a desire to make more serious-minded films and move away from teen fare.

"I'm very excited about the future and trying new things and the unknown," he told MTV News back in April. "Not that I'm done with musicals in any way, but I feel like I've made somewhat of a mark there, and I'd like to try new things before going back to my safe place."

Zac Efron is negotiating to re-team with "17 Again" director Burr Steers on an adaptation of the novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud." The film will likely be the next for Efron, who just ankled Paramount's "Footloose" remake.

Former "Good Morning America" exec producer Ben Sherwood wrote the book, about a caretaker at a cemetery who manages to have weekly meetings with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault.

Marc Platt is producing, and while Efron's deal is still being negotiated, Steers is set and has already begun polishing a script originally written by Craig Pearce, with James Schamus and Lewis Colick also turning in drafts.

Production will begin in July. The Efron-Steers collaboration "17 Again" will be released by New Line/Warner Bros. on April 17.

Charlie’s little brother, Sam perished in the tragic accident that night but Charlie finds a way to still have Sam in his life and keep him near. Tess soon comes into the picture. She is bold, daring, exciting and stunningly beautiful. She makes Charlie want to let go of his hold of “the land of the dead” and come back to fully live life in the world of the living once again. Little does she know that her life is in jeopardy, and only Charlie can help her survive the trials and peril that threatens to take her from him. This story may make the viewer have new faith in that fact that love transcends all boundaries, even death. This story is an adventure of the heart and soul. Charlie faces the risks to save her and heals his own heart in the process.

Zac Efron will make an amazing Charlie St. Cloud and it will be interesting to see what he does in his creation of this character. The role requires many emotional ups and downs and will certainly work his acting muscles. This magical film will be released in 2010.
