Idris Elba Appreciation #1

Biography

Idris Elba, in full Idrissa Akuna Elba, (born September 6, 1972, London, England), British actor who was perhaps best known for his work on the television series The Wire and Luther.

Elba was born to immigrant working-class parents (his father was from Sierra Leone, and his mother was born in Ghana). He became interested in drama while attending school and was awarded a grant by the Prince’s Trust to join (1990) the National Youth Music Theatre. Beginning in his late teens, he worked as a disc jockey under the name DJ Big Driis (later Big Driis the Londoner) while auditioning for acting roles. From the mid-1990s he appeared often on British TV, his roles including recurring characters on Insiders (1997), Family Affairs (1997), and Dangerfield (1999).

Elba’s career break came on the HBO crime drama The Wire, in which for three seasons (2002–04) he played the financially savvy drug kingpin Russell (“Stringer”) Bell. He branched out into comedy on the American version of the sitcom The Office and into romance on the comedy-drama The Big C. Elba later earned critical acclaim as the complex antihero Detective Chief Inspector John Luther in the crime series Luther (2010–). His interpretation of the brilliant but self-destructive Luther earned him a Golden Globe Award (2012) as well as three Emmy Award nominations and a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award nod. Elba’s later TV credits included the miniseries Guerrilla (2017), about radical activists in 1970s London.

During this time, the imposing 6-foot 3-inch (1.9-metres) Elba also appeared on the big screen, having made his feature film debut in Belle maman (1999; Beautiful Mother). He subsequently appeared in such movies as 28 Weeks Later (2007), American Gangster (2007), and Obsessed (2009). In 2011 he joined the Marvel Comics universe as the Norse deity Heimdall in Thor (2011), a role that he reprised in Thor 2: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). The versatile actor earned critical acclaim for his moving portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) and for his harrowing turn as the Commandant, a brutal warlord leading child soldiers in an unnamed African civil war, in Beasts of No Nation (2015); for the latter film he earned a BAFTA Award nomination.

In 2016 Elba played the villainous Krall in Star Trek Beyond, and his rich baritone voice could be heard in three animated films—as the tough police captain (and water buffalo) Chief Bogo in Zootopia, as the villainous tiger Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, and as the sea lion Fluke in Finding Dory. His film credits from 2017 included the action-fantasy The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s popular book series; The Mountain Between Us, an adventure story about two strangers who survive a plane crash; and Molly’s Game, a drama based on a memoir by Molly Bloom, who became famous when she was arrested for her role in an illegal high-stakes poker ring favoured by Hollywood celebrities.

Elba was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016.

A Life in the Day: Idris Elba on staying hungry on set, hard beats and surviving on four hours’ sleep

Born in Hackney, east London, the actor, director, producer and DJ Idris Elba, 46, got his big break in the HBO series The Wire, before starring in the hit BBC drama Luther. He has two children: Isan, a daughter from his first marriage to Kim Norgaard, and Winston, a son from a previous relationship with Naiyana Garth. He lives in London with his fiancée, Sabrina Dhowre.

The first person I speak to when I wake up is generally Sabrina, but I’m not a morning person, so I’ll usually just grunt something like, “Morning, I’m good,” then I’ll need to be left alone until I’m ready to function. I’m usually awake by 6am, but it takes me until 9am to feel ready to take on the world.

I’m an only child, so I’ve always had a big imagination. I’ve also always been ambitious and I don’t put a limit on what I can achieve. My workload might swamp some people, but I keep it in check by maintaining perspective.

I imagine myself out of my body and look down and I see six other people exactly like me, doing exactly the same thing, and that makes me feel a lot calmer. It neutralises the panic and reduces the risk of becoming overwhelmed. I’ve had asthma all my life, so if I’m not feeling as if I’m in a hospital bed with an oxygen mask on my face, then I tell myself I’m doing OK.

After porridge and a glass of water at home, I’m usually on set for 12 hours. My mum always says, “Wow, how many hours?” but I’m a career actor, I’ve been doing it for 25 years, so I’m conditioned to the workload. If I’m playing a role with an accent I’ll keep it all day, so at lunchtime people might say: “Oh OK, Idris is doing a weird accent, I’ll just ignore it.”

I’m not a big eater, so for lunch I’ll just have some fish or chicken. I stay deliberately hungry, as it keeps my concentration higher. If I get any breaks I might snatch some phone time with my family or maybe update my Instagram feed, probably with clips of me in the studio or playing a gig.

I don’t read stuff about myself, because you can be really affected by other people’s opinions. Some can be really mean and it can break your day up and I just prefer not to let that energy in.

I’m 46 and I’ve been through pretty much every scenario any human could go through. People go through **** and people go through great times and that’s a circular thing. There are some things in my life that I wish were better and some things that I’m happy with, so right now I’m in balance. For me, it’s about controlling energy. If you’ve got someone who has an energy that doesn’t really chime with yours, I’m the kind of guy to veer the other way, not confront it.

When I get home after filming, I like to sit on my sofa, look at the ceiling and literally do nothing. I might speak to Sab for a bit or relax with some music, but my favourite thing is to listen to the silence.

If I’m not DJing, we might watch a movie and get an Indian takeaway or venture out and try a new restaurant. If I’m cooking, I love barbecuing.

When I have a gig, that changes my day significantly and I’ll have to get into that zone for two hours for the show, which might not finish until 3am, so on those nights I’m not asleep until maybe 4, but I’ll manage that by having a 40-minute power nap in the afternoon. As long as I can get four hours’ decent sleep, I can still function the next day. I don’t have a specific pre-sleep ritual, but I love my bed. I love lots of nice, soft pillows — that sort of sensory stimulation keeps me in balance.

I’m not a religious person and I don’t have a particular entry point or mantra, but I would say I’m a spiritual person, particularly about people. I just lead by example.

WORDS OF WISDOM
  • Best advice I was given My dad said: “Look someone in the eyes when you’re talking to them”
  • Advice I’d give Do what makes you happy and fear nothing
  • What I wish I’d known At the end of the day, life goes on

Just sharing this.
