Silver Oar Awards 2004 (Young Americans)

i was just wondering.............is there going to be a SOA04???? it would be good. i know there hasn't been so much new fic this year, but there is some and most of it's really good.
besides, maybe promoting the awards will be an incentive for new authors to come forward, and old ones to continue writing. just a suggestion................
anyone know anything about it?

[copying and pasting from the YA board]

I personally don't think there's enough recent fics to justify a SOA4. I know old fics are eligible, but if we just keep going back to old fics it kinda feels like we're picking the awards out of a gradually diminishing pool. But then, that's just what I think.

The prospect is certainly there, though. If people are keen for it, then I see no reason why it can't be held. It's just that the organisers of the past SOAs have sort of disappeared over the years and it will probably be harder to rally up people to participate, both in a voting sense and in a helping-out sense.

Half of Myself, I hope you don't mind but I just edited your opening post so people would know it's for the YA fandom.

i had noticed, but that's fine my name's Troy, by the way

who originally organised the awards? i've only just become a YA fan, so i don't know much about them. it's just Toria was talking about them, and i think we have a bookmarked link on here somewhere. maybe if we could find who runs the site and see whta they think, if they're willing to get another set going.

There were SOAs 1 and 2, organised (I think overall) by Courtney the webmistress of Required Reading. I'm pretty sure she won't be up for a next awards, seeing RR hasn't been updated for one or two years. Debi (Mrs Beck) was also involved, and she's still quite active on the Ian Somerhalder board, but I don't know how keen she'll be.

A few of the current FFers organised SOA3, I think Patty handled the votes and Lauren designed the site.

Again, I'm not sure how many fics were written during the period between SOA3 and SOA4. I've written three or four episodes, NB's done two or three, there was Depudor and Estee's Behind Enemy Lines triology, and there are a few fics up at fanfic.net that are relatively recent... that's all the ones I know about. Is that enough to justify another awards session? For SOA3 we already had to squish a few previous categories together to reflect the lessening production rate, will we have to do that even further if we decide to hold a SOA4?

I'm with Troy here. I know and understand that in the last year there's been just a few YA fanfic but I definitely go for SOA4.

Maybe we could wait for a while to do it. I PMed Shrr and she said she'll probably have something of Adventures done by April. I guess Estee and Harmony will have finished some other fics of NB by that time too.

Just my opinion

I think it's a cool idea, I want to see the show, but hsve read some fics.

Orton 02-22-2004 04:11 PM

Hey,

I think it would be cool if there was another round of the awards. But i'd think it would be only fair if all the new stories got nominated instead of the old stories, because it's always the same authors getting nominated every time. Plus I do agree that many new authors will come and join in.

Anyway I agree with Troy, as long as the SOA are willing to do the awards. I see no harm

well i'm perfectly happy to attempt to organise it - i'll sort out categories, voting, nominations etc. but i'm not so hot on designing sites - i don't know any of the codes or anything, and i don't have anywhere to host it. so if i can find a web-literate friend to design then i can have a go at organising. and i'm sure Toria can help me.

anyone volunteering???? obviously i'll have to do some serious fic hunting, but i'm up for that

Troy, I can design very simple websites, like the two in my sig (not the Acid Rain one, I'm not as good as them). If that's enough, I'd be willing to help you

Half of Myself 02-25-2004 11:05 AM

wow they're plenty good enough for me. especially seeing as i can't do any better lol
well if you're happy to design the site, and i can organise it, with Toria's help, then i do believe we can have SOA:04!
all we need now are some new fics. i'll have a look around the fanfic sites to see how many new ones there are.
if we leave it for a while then that'll give people a chance to write and finish their fics. i know Toria wanted to finish her two, and i'm sure there are others. plus i want as many potential nominations before there are categories.
so........anyone care to set a date?
wow this is so exciting!!!!!!!

Orton 02-25-2004 03:44 PM

Hey,

I think if you give people a month or so that would be enough time for them to finish of any stories they have written. Obvioulsy the authors that are near the end of their story. New authors seriously don't need to rush it, because the quality of their work will suffer due to deadlines. But whenever your sorted with the nominations and web designs.

Hmm, what happened to the SOA3 site? It's supposed to be at http://www.geocities.com/thesilveroarawards but it doesn't seem like it's there anymore. Strange...

Half of Myself 03-08-2004 02:14 PM

you're right! how odd............

anyone know a good host to start designing this year's page?

Silversun 03-08-2004 03:23 PM

Well, we've always used geocities before and the mystery disappearance aside, it seems to hold up well.
