She's so awful, a kid shouldn't have to bargain with their mother for her to choose them (Sam taking the camp with them because Mary didn't want to leave the camp)

exactly!! Sam wanted so desperately to have a mom growing up and this is what he ends up with...they are both better off without her

It's so sad because he is so desperate for her love and her affection and she only gives it him when he does something for her
