It's funny, the dance that we now call just "waltz" is not that waltz, but the "slow waltz", which had not yet been invented in Strauss's time. What Strauss and his contemporaries wrote is what we now call "Viennese waltz", which is at a considerably faster tempo. We emphasize this to beginner dancers: the Viennese footwork is different, and if you try to dance Viennese waltz with slow-waltz footwork, you'll trip your partner and you will both be flat on the floor.

In Dutch we say "English Waltz" (slow) and "Wiener waltz".

Lol, in English, "Weiner waltz" means something else.
 I occasionally hear the slow waltz called "Boston waltz"; I guess Boston was the place where it was brought into the U.S. Fulton County Jane Doe -- Brandi Carlile (I may not have that named spelled right) __________________
