The Broadcast Film Critics Association is the largest film critics' organization in the United States, with about 250 television, radio and online critics in its ranks. The CCMA is typically a far strong predictor of Oscar success than the Golden Globes; last year all four acting winners went on to receive Academy Awards.
The Critics Choice Movie Awards will be presented on Thursday, January 12 at the Hollywood Palladium. Drive received 8 nominations! BEST PICTURE BEST ACTOR - Ryan Gosling BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - Albert Brooks BEST DIRECTOR - Nicholas Winding Refn BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - Newton Thomas Sigel BEST EDITING - Matthew Newman BEST ACTION MOVIE BEST SCORE - Cliff Martinez |

I want the film, Ryan, and Albert to get nominations. I think all 3 rightly deserve recognition. I'd say director, but I think that's gonna be a tough star-studded race this year.
Also, I hate that cover art. But I have to own it. |

Congrats to Ryan, Nic, Albert and others who got nominations and those who were involved!
To be honest though, these nomination helps but being a genre film it's still a tough road for any nominations other than Albert. For the best actor race, it's super competitive and technically speaking there are 8-9 contenders with more oscar friendly roles who has been actively campaigning, some with veteran studio like TWC and Fox Searchlight behind them. Ryan didn't do any of that and FilmDistrict is a new and small studio. The Drive team only started campaigning (like throwing some parties) last week, while others have been doing for months now. I have yet to see an internet For Your Consideration Ad for Drive Ryan didn't win any critics awards either (i think he's kind of forgotten in the body of work category in favoured of other actors giving multiple performances this year), and most of his competitors have at least one minor award. And his role is too subtle, not showy and flashy enough to be a typical oscar role. Although that is really part of the reason why I loved him as Driver. I think he created one of the most iconic characters of this year. He could have easily been doing impressive of McQueen but he didn't. Plus there are 6 nominees. I don't want to be a downer but I just don't want to get my hopes up again after what happened with Lars But I'd like to believe he still has a shot, and is a dark horse for a nomination! I think (and hope) he is well liked enough in the industry, although it didn't come through for him last year when he was so close with BV. |

No SAG noms, for anything. Not that surprising though.

I was surprised by Brooks' snub! But SAG has such a weird nomination process I'm not surprised. Brooks didn't even really start real campaign until 2 weeks ago.
Did anyone buy the Drive jacket by the way? |

Nope haven't bought the jacket. I don't understand their nomination process.

Oldman isn't all that "in" with the key in-crowds in Hollywood. He needed to go a lot harder in campaigning (like a lot of people thought he was going to this year, finally) than he has to make up for that and he just hasn't -- which is actually a credit to him, IMO.
Drive was MTV #2 film of the year. |

Thanks for the link. Funny I swear I saw Drive was #1 two days ago at MTV.com and now that put The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at #1.
I love Gary Oldman. I mean, he's just so good and different from something like True Romance, to Dracula or Sid. I know he started campaigning a few weeks ago but you are right, the crowd hasn't really been cutting him some slacks. He is getting a Palm Spring film fest awards though in Jan, whatever that may mean for his campaign |
