Official Plot
A Most Wanted Man takes place in present day Hamburg, Germany where a mysterious, tortured and near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man on the run arrives in the city’s Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father’s ill-gotten fortune. Nothing about this young man seems to add up; is he a victim or a thief or, worse still, an extremist intent on destruction? Drawn into this web of intrigue is a private British banker and a young female lawyer determined to defend the defenseless. All the while, they are being watched by the brilliant, roguish chief of a covert German spy unit (Hoffman), who fights to put the pieces together as the clock ticks.

Production Notes
The movie is directed by Anton Corbijn and the screenplay is written by Andrew Bovell and it's adapted from John le Carré's novel. The production is expected to start in September in Hamburg.

A MOST WANTED MAN (7/25)
Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Willem Dafoe
In his final leading-man role, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a post-9/11 German intelligence agent stalking a troubled Islamic immigrant, who may or may not be linked to a terror network. Hoffman’s agent wants to use him as bait to catch a bigger target, but his German rivals and American intelligence have their own priorities. It’s vintage John le Carré, who wrote the 2008 novel, and vintage Hoffman. The last act will take your breath away.

Will there be any sort of premiere or promotion for the release next month? I miss her!

amanda s. 05-28-2014 10:14 AM

I sure hope so! I think she'll probably do something for it.

winterbird 06-02-2014 02:30 AM

I'm not sure Elle, I agree with Amanda I hope so. The release is July 25 in the US but I kind of have the feeling that they won't do much promotion for this. I hope she will but it's a more indie kind of movie so I don't expect much.

I found a new Sundance portrait, probably one of my favorites so far

I was just thinking that even though it is an indie-ish sort of movie, I wonder if PSH's passing will mean they'll do MORE promotion for it.

And thanks so much for sharing the photo, Lindsey!

I actually expect less promotion for it Amanda. It must be difficult for them to talk about him and maybe also out of respect for him? But I don't know. You never know with Rachel, I wasn't expecting her to promote To The Wonder and she did.

AMWM is part of Rolling Stone's 'Alt-Summer Film Preview 2014: 20 Non-Blockbuster Movies to Check Out' list:

'A Most Wanted Man' (July 25)
This adaptation of John le Carré's thriller about an intelligence officer chasing down terrorists in Hamburg has taken on a new significance: It revolves around one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's final performances, complete with an understated German accent and chilling sense of world-weariness. But Anton Corbijn's moody, brooding spy-vs-spy drama could not serve as a better tribute to the late star; the way that Hoffman enlivens the suspense without overshadowing the proceedings reminds you of what an incredible talent this guy was.

ETA: I was also thinking that Rachel's appearance on Who Do You Think You Are? might be part of the promotion? If they will air her episode on July 23 (the season premiere date) then it would be perfect timing for the US release of AMWM :)

amanda s. 06-06-2014 06:13 PM

Maybe so, Lindsey. I know it's not really very nice, but I kind of expect his passing to be exploited for the films that haven't been released yet, tbh.

And also, I thought Cynthia Nixon's episode was the premiere! Didn't the sites all have the first look at her episode? I sort of took that to mean hers would be the premiere, though you're right, Rachel's coinciding with the release would be a great strategy.

winterbird 06-07-2014 05:04 AM

I'm not sure the Nixon is the premiere, they do give the impression it is. I was just guessing about Rachel's episode air date but it does seem a possibility to me :)

Looks like Anton Corbijn's photobook for AMWM has a new cover and title:

It's lovely, thanks for posting, Lindsey!

A Most Wanted Man was just given an "R" rating in the US - "for language", as per the MPAA website.

In Australia, the film was recently rated "M" - for Coarse language and mature themes.

Sounds about right! Thanks for the info, Nick!

winterbird 06-15-2014 04:14 AM

Thanks for the heads up Nick :) I wasn't really expecting a R-rating. I hope we will get a second trailer soon-ish. The US release is not that far away.

EDIT: I just realized that all of Rachel's recent movies (About Time, Passion, and To The Wonder) got R-ratings.

^ probably why her star power hasn't been like the old days when her films were more publicized and are more accessible...

amanda s. 06-15-2014 07:03 PM

I completely agree with you, Wendy.
